Recaro Plans Major Expansion of Its Headquarters

Recaro Aircraft Seating has selected a design by Stuttgart-based architects MDM for a major expansion of its headquarters in Schwaebisch Hall, Germany. The company says it will invest millions into constructing new buildings and renovating existing ones, with the first phase of construction beginning in early 2019. “MDM's proposal fits perfectly into our property and existing buildings. The well thought-out concept is ideally designed to meet our, at times, complex requirements,” said Joachim Ley, Recaro’s executive vice-president of Supply Chain. “We were also impressed with the proposal’s excellent urban integration.”

Singapore Airlines Will Offer “Wellness Cuisine” on World’s Longest Flight

Singapore Airlines has partnered with Canyon Ranch to develop nutrition-focused menus for its upcoming 18-hour-and-45-minute ultra-long-haul flight between Singapore and New York City. Sleep, exercise and stretching guides backed by science will be available on the in-flight entertainment system with the aim of reducing jet lag on what will be the world’s longest commercial flight. SIA says the food menu will prioritize nutrition and hydration and feature bold flavors.

Researcher Claims to Have Found In-Flight Wi-Fi Vulnerabilities

A researcher from digital security firm IOActive has claimed that he is the first person to figure out how to access aircraft systems without being on the airplane. Ruben Santamarta shared his findings in a white paper after flying with Norwegian between Madrid and Copenhagen last November when he analyzed the aircraft’s in-flight Wi-Fi system while in the air. Details of the alleged vulnerabilities were not explained in detail for security reasons, but included backdoors and the interception and manipulation of data traffic to and from aircraft. However, none of the vulnerabilities gave access to avionics systems used by pilots.

Grey Goose Vodka Pop-Up Brings Provençal Market to Airports

Passengers traveling through airports in Mumbai and Paris can experience a French Riviera-themed pop-up from Grey Goose, which highlights the brand’s limited-edition French Riviera bottle. Created for retail partners Mumbai Duty Free and Lagardère Travel Retail, the pop-ups feature blue and white Provençal market stalls to emphasize the vodka brand’s Gallic heritage.

Southwest Will Only Allow Cats and Dogs as Emotional Support Animals

Southwest Airlines announced it will only allow cats and dogs on its flights as emotional support animals and will allow one per passenger. The airline’s new policy requires animals to remain in a carrier or on a leash. Passengers traveling with emotional support animals will also need to present a letter from a medical doctor or licensed mental health professional on the day of departure.

United Will Charge Extra for Economy Seats at Front of Cabin

United Airlines will begin charging customers an extra fee for seats toward the front of the economy-class cabin, but behind its Economy Plus rows. The move is being made in conjunction with the airline’s introduction of its Corporate Preferred program, which will offer new benefits to travelers whose employers have corporate contracts with United. One of the perks for these travelers and MileagePlus Premier status frequent flyers will be complimentary seats toward the front of the cabin.

LEVEL Launches Flights From Vienna

IAG’s low-cost subsidiary LEVEL has launched flights from its new operating base in Vienna, Austria. The airline’s Airbus A321 fleet last week began operating 43 weekly flights to eight destinations comprising Ibiza, Alicante, Dubrovnik, Larnaca, Milan, Paris, Valencia and Bilbao. EasyJet and Ryanair have also established low-cost operations in Vienna this past year.
