Turkish Airlines Selects Rockwell Collins’ MiQ Business-Class Seats

Turkish Airlines has selected Rockwell Collins’ MiQ seating for the business-class cabins on board its new single-aisle aircraft. Rockwell Collins said that it has already started delivering shipsets for 92 Airbus A321neos and 77 Boeing 737 MAXs. Ahmet Olmuştur, Turkish Airlines’ chief marketing officer, said the MiQ platform will increase comfort “to an even higher level” with features including seatback in-flight entertainment displays, retractable privacy panels, accessible personal stowage and power outlets.

ANA Will Serve Space Food on Tokyo–Houston Flights

In honor of Japan’s Space Day and Sky Day, All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) have teamed up to serve space food on flights between Tokyo’s Narita International Airport and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport. From September 12 to 20, passengers in all classes of service can dine on dishes, such as beef curry, that have been designed and packaged to be consumed in microgravity. ANA will also offer space travel-themed in-flight entertainment content, including a message from Japanese astronaut (and former ANA pilot) Takuya Onishi.

What’s in an Airport Code? Poetry, It Turns Out

Slated for release this October, Nasser Hussain’s second poetry collection SKY WRI TEI NGS pushes the envelope on aeronautical expression with poems composed entirely out of three-letter IATA airport codes. The collection’s poems assume various forms and styles, and cover a range of themes, from air travel to Gamergate and Islamophobia. Illustrations by Matthew Stephenson map out the flight paths of poems and help to visualize Hussain’s exploration of the relationship between place and language.

castLabs Partners With ContentArmor for Anti-Piracy Content Watermarking

Digital video technology provider castLabs has partnered with ContentArmor, a global provider of content protection technologies for the media industry, to improve anti-piracy protection. The collaboration will see castLabs integrate ContentArmor’s session-based video watermarking with its over-the-top (OTT) video toolkit for in-flight entertainment deployments. “This integration with ContentArmor technologies gives castLabs customers a wider range of tools to help them keep their content secure,” said Michael Stattmann, CEO at castLabs.

Icelandair CEO Resigns After Full-Year Profit Guidance Lowered

Icelandair president and CEO Björgólfur Jóhannsson has tendered his resignation, effective August 27. The decision came after the airline lowered its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) to $80–$100 million, down by about 50% since the beginning of the year, having originally expected a $170–$190 million full-year EBITDA. Jóhannsson said Icelandair will also likely increase its average fares before the end of the year.

[PHOTOS] Stansted Airport Reveals Renderings of Arrivals Terminal

London Stansted Airport has unveiled renderings of its upcoming arrivals terminal. Scheduled to open in 2020, the £130-million facility is designed by Pascall+Watson and will include spacious immigration and baggage reclaim areas, in addition to a plaza-style forecourt at the building’s entrance. “The arrivals terminal is the centerpiece project of our £600-million transformation program and these latest images really whet the appetite of what the new and improved London Stansted Airport will look like when the facility opens,” said Paul Willis, London Stansted’s transformation director.

Gate Gourmet Acquires SCK Services

Gategroup subsidiary Gate Gourmet announced it will acquire the operating assets and customer contracts of the SCK Sky Catering Kitchen Group. The Germany-based group of companies provides domestic and international catering services to airlines from four locations: Berlin (at Tegel and Schönefeld airports), Stuttgart and Nuremberg. Under the terms of the deal, SCK Services will be integrated into Gate Gourmet Germany as a separate legal entity. The value of the transaction hasn’t been disclosed and the purchase is subject to antitrust clearance.
