APEX and Crystal Cabin Awards Finalists Announced Ahead of EXPO

The finalists for the eight APEX Awards and a special new Crystal Cabin Award category have been announced ahead of the official awards ceremony, which will take place on Monday, September 24 at APEX EXPO in Boston. At the ceremony, APEX will also honor Air Canada’s president and CEO, Calin Rovinescu, with a Lifetime Achievement Award, while recognizing the Newcomer of the Year and revealing the results of the Passenger Choice Awards.

Viasat and Boeing Achieve ViaSat-3 Satellite Integration Milestone

The ViaSat-3 payload module structure built by Boeing has arrived at Viasat’s facility in Tempe, Arizona. Viasat will now begin payload integration and testing for the first ViaSat-3 class satellite, scheduled to begin providing Ka-band broadband services over the Americas in 2020. "Delivery of the first ViaSat-3 payload module structure marks a major milestone: the transition from the engineering and design phase to production on our first ViaSat-3 class satellite,” said Dave Ryan, president, Space Systems at Viasat.

Vistara Plans to Install smartLavs on Board Airbus A320s to Make Way for More Seats

Vistara plans to increase capacity on board its narrow-body fleet to boost revenue. According to India’s Business Standard, the carrier, which is owned by Tata group and Singapore Airlines, will add an extra row of economy-class seating to the 50 A320/21neos it has on order, increasing the total seat count in each economy-class cabin from 158 to 164. To make space for the additional seats, Vistara will install the smaller smartLav lavatories offered by Airbus, also reducing the seat pitch in the last four rows.

Virgin Australia Converts Boeing 737 MAX 8 Order to MAX 10s

Virgin Australia has converted an existing order for 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8s to the larger MAX 10 variant. Geoff Smith, the airline’s chief financial officer, said the decision to opt for the bigger version of the narrow-body aircraft “will provide additional flexibility and capability to support our network and operations.” The 737 MAX 10s are scheduled for delivery in 2022 and will be able to fly 200 nautical miles further than today’s Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft.

Caribbean Airlines’ In-Flight Snacks and Drinks Menu Is All Local

Caribbean Airlines is introducing a new in-flight snack and beverage catalog featuring only products from Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica. The “Caribbean Café” service will launch on September 1 on board all intra-Caribbean and international flights, offering soft drinks, alcoholic beverages and snacks such as tamarind balls, preserved mango and spice buns. “Such an initiative is a welcome one where locally produced, high quality snacks and beverages can be made available to all persons utilizing the services of Caribbean Airlines,” said Dr. Ramesh Ramdeen, CEO of the Trinidad & Tobago Manufacturers’ Association.

Passengers flying with Lufthansa Group airlines on August 24 may have noticed a more relaxed dress code among pilots, cabin crew and certain ground staff. Lufthansa Group has partnered with Adidas to launch a pair of Lufthansa-branded sneakers, which staff were permitted to wear on the job last Friday. The limited edition white sneakers feature golden yellow laces and Lufthansa’s crane logo next to the Adidas’ three stripes trademark.

Some Privacy, Please: Securing the Future of Passenger Data

Vision-Box worked closely with Toronto’s Ryerson University’s Privacy by Design Centre of Excellence, which directly informed elements of the GDPR, as it developed its Orchestra platform for multi-source data management in analyzing passenger flow. Ann Cavoukian, distinguished expert-in-residence at the Privacy by Design Centre, said it was her first time working with an airline-industry client, and she was pleased with Vision-Box’s approach. “I’m hoping that others in the travel industry will look at their operations and do the same thing,” she said.
