VIDEO: United Cabin Crew Use iPads to Provide “In the Moment Care”

United Airlines says rolling out 80,000 mobile devices to its employees has transformed the way it serves customers. Aviation Festival in London,  APEX Media director Maryann Simson caught up with Linda Jojo, United Airlines’ Chief Digital Officer and executive vice-president of Technology. Jojo explained that if passengers are upset during a flight, cabin crew can provide some form of compensation in the moment using their iPads. “We’ve found that even though something happens, because we’re able to solve it in the moment using those devices, their satisfaction is actually higher than someone who has a perfect flight,” Jojo said.

Etihad Selects Farelogix’s Cloud-Based Merchandising Platform

Etihad Airways has selected Farelogix to improve its merchandising and distribution capabilities. The Abu Dhabi-based airline will use Farelogix’s FLX Merchandise cloud-based platform to provide a broader range of customized offers and increase ancillary revenue. “The new partnership will help us in the journey towards the airline’s digital transformation that focuses on delivering modern retail experiences to customers around the globe,” said Robin Kamark, Etihad’s chief commercial officer.

HAECO to Open China Repair Center for Astronics CSC Customers

HAECO Group has signed an agreement with Astronics CSC to open a service center in Xiamen, China. HAECO’s facility will offer line-fit replaceable unit services, including testing, maintenance and repairs to Astronics customers in China and the Asia-Pacific region. “With our combined technical expertise and vast experience, we are confident that the component services center will provide reliable, high-quality in-flight entertainment and connectivity product maintenance services to airlines in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Clement Au, general manager of HAECO Component Overhaul (Xiamen).

Dulles Airport Introduces Biometric Exit Technology

Dulles International Airport has deployed biometric boarding technology to reduce boarding times for international travelers. Developed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and US Customs and Border Protection, the new veriScan system allows travelers to board flights without showing their passport, instead scanning their faces and comparing the image with photos from a US passport photo or from when a foreign visitor entered the country.

A New Low-Cost Long-Haul Airline Could Launch From Switzerland

A group of four aviation industry veterans, including a Ryanair pilot, is hoping to raise at least $100 million in Switzerland to launch a low-cost long-haul carrier. With the working title of “Swiss Skies,” the new airline could launch in mid-2019. [PHOTOS] Flybe Unveils New Livery

Flybe has unveiled a new livery as part of its rebranding exercise. The new design features two shades of purple over a white paint scheme. To minimize expenses, the UK-based regional carrier will paint around 10 aircraft per year during their scheduled maintenance dates. Flybe’s entire fleet, comprising mainly Bombardier Q400s and some Embraer E175s, will be repainted by 2025.

Emirates Says Drinking During Flights Is Not Prohibited

British media has been reporting that the UK government is advising British travelers to the UAE that it’s illegal to drink alcohol in the country, and even on board flights to the country. However, Emirates responded to several customers on Twitter who asked whether they risked being arrested for drinking during a flight by reiterating that drinking alcohol on board is “not prohibited.” Last month, a Swedish woman made headlines when she claimed she was arrested after drinking a glass of wine on an Emirates flight from London to Dubai, although it later emerged she tried to enter the country with an expired passport.
