LATAM Set to Launch Augmented Reality Tool That Measures Carry-On Luggage

LATAM gave FTE Global attendees a sneak peek at a new augmented reality feature set to launch in both iOS and Android versions of its app next week. The tool allows users to superimpose a virtual box over their carry-on bag to determine whether it is within the permitted dimensions, Cata Matta, LATAM Airlines Group’s head of Digital Services, told APEX Media. KLM launched a similar feature in its iOS app last week.

BoardConnect Portable Wireless IFE Enters New Generation

Lufthansa Systems says a new Mobile Streaming Unit will allow its BoardConnect wireless in-flight entertainment system to provide high-quality streaming services to up to 100 passengers, which is double the number possible with the previous version of the product. BoardConnect Portable can also support the use of messaging applications and online payments with BoardConnect Portable/Link, a solution which requires an antenna to make use of Iridium NEXT technology.

Turkish Airlines Unveils New Cabin Uniforms by Italian Designer

Turkish Airlines has unveiled new cabin crew uniforms by Milan-based fashion designer Ettore Bilotta. The uniforms combine traditional patterns found in artisanal Turkish glassware, ceramics and calligraphy with contemporary textures and details. The outfits feature a color scheme of burgundy red and charcoal gray and include hats, gloves, dresses, bags and accessories. Cabin crew will begin wearing the uniforms at the end of October, when Istanbul New Airport is scheduled to open.

Boeing Predicts China Will Buy $1.2 Trillion Worth of Aircraft in Next 20 Years

Boeing forecasts Chinese airlines will buy 7,690 new aircraft worth $1.2 trillion over the next 20 years. The latest projection, which is a 6.2% increase over Boeing’s 2017 estimate for China, is attributed to “the country’s growing middle class, which has more than tripled in the last 10 years and is expected to double again in the next 10,” said Randy Tinseth, Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ vice-president of Marketing. Of the 7,690 aircraft in Boeing’s forecast, more than 6,000 are expected to be narrow-body jets.

Biometric Entry Trial at Washington Dulles Yields Success

US Customs and Border Protection began trialling a biometric scanning system in arrivals at Washington Dulles International Airport on September 6. Speaking at FTE Global in Las Vegas, Colleen Manaher, executive director for Planning, Program Analysis and Evaluation, Office of Field Operations for CBP, said the system is already improving the airport’s accuracy and processing times. A Korean Air flight that previously took more than 70 minutes to process upon arrival was cleared in under 25 minutes. In less than a week, the system identified multiple passengers traveling on fraudulent documents, including one on a US passport.

Finnair and Helsinki Airport Produce Short Film

Finnair and Helsinki Airport have produced a fictional short film to celebrate their 35-year partnership. The 13-minute-long East and West Side Story, directed by South Korea’s Young-Wook Paik and Sweden’s Johan Storm, premiered September 6 inside one of Helsinki Airport’s aircraft hangars. The story spans three continents and is an “example of modern companies using branded entertainment to tell more emotional stories and reach an even wider audience around the world,” Finnair said.

Satcom Direct Now Iridium Certus Value Added Manufacturer

Iridium Certus has approved Satcom Direct (SD) as the latest value added manufacturer for its aviation products. SD will design and manufacture new terminals that are compatible with the Iridium Certus service and will integrate its existing hardware and software with the satellite communications platform. “Between the upcoming completion of the Iridium NEXT launch campaign and the beginning of the initial flight trials, the coming months are very promising,” said Bryan Hartin, executive vice-president of Sales and Marketing at Iridium.
