Emirates and Etihad Deny Merger Report

Emirates and Etihad have denied a report by Bloomberg that quoted an unnamed source who said Emirates is seeking to take over Etihad. “There is no truth to this rumor,” an Emirates spokesperson told Reuters. Etihad issued a similar statement. However, a source close to Etihad told Reuters on Thursday that, while a merger could conceivably happen in the future, Abu Dhabi would not give up control of the airline and its brand, especially after having made a substantial investment in its international airport and other aviation infrastructure.

The technology will also be used for CBP processing of international travelers arriving in the US.

How Will Access to Viewership Data Change the Distribution Industry?

Content service providers are creating new platforms that give airlines access to accurate viewership data for in-flight entertainment. According to president of Entertainment in Motion Neal Rothman, this could have a knock-on effect for distribution companies. “If content service providers and airlines selectively use this data as a negotiating tactic with distributors, then I think there are going to be some issues,” Rothman said. “However, if the industry can come together in full transparency, then of course we’ll be impacted, but we’ll be able to come up with appropriate licensing models.”

Air New Zealand Partners With Allbirds for In-Flight Eye Mask

Air New Zealand has partnered with eco-friendly footwear company Allbirds to design an in-flight eye mask. Dubbed “the Bird Mask” due to its birdlike features, Allbirds says its design uses New Zealand merino wool and castor bean oil-based foam. The mask features molded eye indentations, which allow for natural eye movement and a birdlike beak to provide a seal against the face to block out light. “By putting our heads together, we’ve created a product our customers will truly value and re-use again and again, while also benefiting New Zealand’s international brand awareness,” said Mike Tod, Air New Zealand’s chief marketing and customer officer.

IFPL’s patent-pending Charge to Charge solution will soon enable airlines to boost ancillary revenue by charging passengers who want to make sure their devices don’t run out of juice while in the air. “When you plug your phone in, an app talks to the outlet and turns the power on and off,” explained David Thomas, IFPL’s vice-president of Business Development. “We’ve had a lot of interest because it’s another way airlines can generate ancillary revenue.”
