Kontron and Immfly Soar With Pegasus Airlines

Kontron and Immfly have partnered to deploy an integrated in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) solution on Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines. Using Kontron’s hardware, including the ACE Flight 4600 Airborne Server, removable storage devices and the Cab-n-Connect A100 cabin wireless access point, the Immfly IFEC platform will be installed on Pegasus’ current fleet of 81 aircraft, including Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s, over the next two years.

Virgin Atlantic Becomes First Airline to Fly With Jet Fuel Made Partly From Recycled Waste

Virgin Atlantic has become the first commercial airline to use jet fuel made from recycled industrial waste. A Boeing 747-operated flight today from Orlando to London’s Gatwick Airport was powered by a new blend comprising 95% standard jet fuel and 5% ethanol produced from waste gases. However, the sustainable element could eventually form 50%. The fuel blend was produced in the US by LanzaTech, which claims it could supply a fifth of the aviation industry’s fuel and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 65% compared to conventional petroleum.

Career Choices: Air Astana Launches Six Educational Kits for Kids

Air Astana worked with Kaelis – a provider of independent onboard products, services and solutions for airlines — to develop six occupation-themed kits for children: chef, vet and superhero (for children between the ages of 3 and 6) and architect, detective and explorer (for those aged 7 to 11). “We think it’s important that kids learn during the hours in flight,” Rocio Cordoba, marketing designer at Kaelis, said. A new kit with a different theme will be offered each month.

Airbus Selects AIM Altitude as A320 Galley Supplier

Airbus has selected AIM Altitude to develop, manufacture and supply galley and stowage systems for the A320 aircraft family. The products will be available from 2020 to airline customers as a supplier-furnished equipment (SFE) option, making AIM Altitude a tier one supplier to Airbus. “This is a huge milestone for us as it’s the first time we have been selected as a major SFE interiors supplier to Airbus,” said Richard Bower, AIM Altitude’s CEO.

KLM Integrates AR Hand Luggage Checker Into Facebook Messenger

KLM has integrated its augmented reality (AR) tool for measuring the dimensions of hand baggage into the Facebook Messenger app, just weeks after the service was launched in the airline’s iOS app. The service is available to iPhone users and allows customers to check whether carry-on items will fit in KLM’s overhead bins. “Checking the dimensions of a suitcase before you even set foot in the airport will create a smoother experience for passengers and we are pleased our technology could contribute to making that happen,” said Stefanos Loukakos, head of Messenger Business at Facebook.

magniX Is One Step Closer to All-Electric Commercial Aviation

magniX, a Washington-based startup, last week announced it successfully tested its 350 horsepower (HP) all-electric motor mounted to a Cessna light aircraft. Speaking to APEX Media, magniX’s CEO Roei Ganzarski, who previously served as chief customer officer for Boeing’s Flight Services division, said the company’s long-term goal is to supply all-electric propulsion systems for commercial aircraft, which will fly what he describes as the “middle mile” market, by 2022–2024.In the short term, Ganzarski said magniX plans to start flight testing its 350HP and 750HP motors by the second half of 2019.

CTT Systems Secures Undisclosed Airline Customer for In-Flight Humidification System

CTT Systems, a company that manufactures aircraft humidity control systems, announced that an undisclosed airline has selected its in-flight humidification (IFH) system to be linefit on board its upcoming Airbus A350-900 business-class cabins. The upcoming wide-body fleet is scheduled to be delivered from Q3 of 2019 until 2023. The IFH system is designed to help passengers stay hydrated, while improving taste and sleep quality and reducing the effects of jet lag.
