ALD Explores Incorporating Biometrics and Virtual Reality Into Airport Lounges

As Airport Lounge Development (ALD) opens its eighteenth lounge, the company’s director of Strategic Network Development, Graham Richards, discusses the growing demand for shared-use lounges and plans for the future.  "As biometric scanning gets introduced at airports, it makes perfect sense that it’s part of the lounge experience too,” Richards told APEX Media. “We are also evaluating virtual reality ... It’s something you can expect to see in our lounges in the future.”

Airborne Wireless Network Field Tests Held Back by Technical Issues

Airborne Wireless Network (ABWN) has provided an update on the testing of its Infinitus Super Highway. While lab tests have demonstrated the system can transfer data at speeds above 10 Gbps, hardware and software integration issues have prevented the same results from being replicated during recent field testing. “We have experienced a number of hardware and software setbacks, which we are working on daily to position ourselves so we may be able to conduct a sustained field test at 10 Gbps data transfer over a distance of 2 km,” said Michael J. Warren, CEO of ABWN.

Detecting Diseases Before They Fly

Identifying travelers with communicable infections or diseases at airports could soon be easier. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology in Leipzig, Germany, have developed a diagnostic tool intended to stop airports from being gateways for spreading infections. The tool uses ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), which is often used to analyze swabs taken from baggage, clothing and personal items when searching for drugs or explosives. Dirk Kuhlmeier, the project’s lead researcher, discovered that IMS can also detect signs of respiratory infection and even distinguish bacteria strains that have become resistant to antibiotics.

Heathrow Targets Electric-Hybrid Flights by 2030

London’s Heathrow Airport has unveiled an initiative to encourage the first electric-hybrid aircraft to go into service at the airport. We championed carbon neutral growth in global aviation, which will come into effect in 2020,” said Heathrow’s CEO, John Holland-Kaye. “The next frontier is zero carbon flying, and I hope this prize will help to make it a reality at Heathrow by 2030.”
