Cathay Pacific Data Breach Affects Up to 9.4 Million Customers

Cathay Pacific suffered a major data breach, which may have resulted in the theft of up to 9.4 million customers’ personal details. The Hong Kong-based carrier said data, including passengers' names, dates of birth, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and passport numbers, were exposed in a hack of its IT systems earlier this year. "We are very sorry for any concern this data security event may cause our passengers," CEO Rupert Hogg said in a statement. The hackers also gained access to 27 credit card numbers, but not the accompanying security codes. The airline said it has “no evidence that any personal data has been misused," adding that "no passwords were compromised.”

“Reversal” of IFE Trends Supports APEX Position on Entertainment

IATA’s latest Global Passenger Survey revealed that a larger share of passengers would rather watch in-flight entertainment (IFE) content on a seatback screen (54%) than on their own device (36%). The figures represent a U-turn on the 2016 response to the same question, wherein 51% of passengers said they preferred watching content on their own devices and just 39% registered a preference for seatback IFE. “The answer for IFE is not one or the other; it’s both,” said Dr. Joe Leader, APEX CEO.

AirMedia Signs Wi-Fi Agreements With Three Chinese Carriers

AirMedia Group announced that its subsidiary, Beijing Yuehang Tianyi Electronic Information Technology, has signed strategic cooperation agreements with Qingdao Airlines, Chengdu Airlines and Yunnan Hongtu Airlines. The agreements outline plans to cooperate on the deployment of in-flight Wi-Fi and entertainment and the management of air-to-ground satellite communications. “These collaborations with the airlines consolidate our efforts in shaping our strategies to meet the advent of a new era of in-flight connectivity,” said Herman Man Guo, chairman and CEO of AirMedia.

Donica Installs In-Flight Wi-Fi Across Air Macau Fleet

Donica, in partnership with Chengdu Falcon Aircraft Engineering Service, has installed its W6000 Wi-Fi streaming system on board Air Macau’s fleet. Donica China CEO Justin Min said the W6000 hardware is the “simplest Wi-Fi solution of its kind” on the market. Not only does this design simplify the installation effort, but also greatly reduces the future recurring workload for content update and maintenance,” he said.

How TAP Portugal Uses Touch’s Data Analytics Tool to Shape IFE Content

Miguel Ferreira, TAP Portugal’s IFE manager, and André Valera, Touch Inflight Solutions’ director of Business Development, spoke to APEX Media about how Touch’s Data Analytics Platform can help airlines optimize content. “[Touch’s Data Analytics Tool] allows us to see that [TAP’s Riding Portugal series] has had tremendous engagement on board with a more than 90% play-through rate,” Ferreira said. “Deep analysis of the data allows you to take better and budget-wise decisions.”

Alipay to Land at North American Airports

Alipay has partnered with HMSHost to supply the Chinese mobile payment platform at airports across North America before the end of the year. Once deployed, Chinese travelers visiting the US and Canada will be able to make purchases at HMSHost-operated restaurants in most major airports across both countries. “We are thrilled to partner with HMSHost to provide Chinese consumers with a more familiar way to pay while dining at airports,” said Yulei Wang, general manager, Alipay North America.

Delta Air Lines Commits to Banning Single-Use Plastics on Flights

Delta Air Lines says it will eliminate single-use plastic items such as straws, stir sticks and utensils from its aircraft by 2019. The announcement follows similar moves by United Airlines, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Delta will replace stir sticks and straws with compostable alternatives and will also stop wrapping amenities and utensils in plastic.
