Sabre Acquires Farelogix for $360 Million

Sabre Corporation has agreed to acquire Miami-based distribution company Farelogix for $360 million. The deal, which has been in discussion for the past nine months, was announced this morning by Sabre. "By integrating Farelogix's capabilities into Sabre's leading airline technology platform, we'll be able to offer the innovative and comprehensive solutions that airlines require,” said Sean Menke, president and CEO of Sabre.

SkyLights Partners With StoryUp XR for VR-Based Meditation on Long-Haul Flights

SkyLights has announced a partnership with StoryUP XR, which developed virtual and augmented reality-based meditation channel Healium. The two companies will explore how the content could be used to enhance passenger wellness on long-haul flights. SkyLights said in a statement that Healium is the “world’s first” immersive media channel designed to combat stress. It monitors users’ brain and heart activity via a wireless headband and other wearables to offer interactive VR mindfulness content.

Flybe Puts Itself Up for Sale

Flybe has put itself up for sale amid pressure from rising fuel costs, the weaker value of the pound and lower demand. The UK-based carrier said in a statement that it is in discussions with numerous operators about a potential sale. Christine Ourmières-Widener, Flybe’s CEO, said the airline has a “strategy in place that is working” but is experiencing negative effects from “external headwinds” and that a sale is one of several options being explored. EasyJet and Stobart Group are looking at buying Flybe, according to the Financial Times.

Jazeera Airways Launches Bluebox Wow Wireless IFE

Jazeera Airways is launching a complimentary wireless in-flight entertainment service, becoming the first Middle East airline customer for the Bluebox Wow system. The FE service, called Jazeera Screens, will be available for passengers to stream movie and TV content to their iOS and Android personal devices on all Jazeera flights. Passengers can also play games and read about local destinations; in-flight shopping will be added to the platform later this year.

Third FTE Tech Download Think Tank Addresses Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Biometrics

During the FTE Tech Download Think Tank session at FTE Asia EXPO 2018, APEX/IFSA CEO Joe Leader said, “Artificial intelligence and machine learning have the ability to double the amount of profit per passenger worldwide.” As an example, Al McGowan, senior director of Innovation for Panasonic Avionics, pointed to the company partnering with behavioral AI company Arimo to analyze five years’ worth of in-flight Wi-Fi data in an effort to increase revenue for airlines.

Etihad Launches “Choose Well” Brand Campaign

Etihad Airways launched a new brand campaign to coincide with the airline’s 15th anniversary. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier says its “Choose Well” campaign references the choices passengers make when traveling and the customization available when flying with Etihad. “Research showed that Etihad offering greater choices was a game changer,” said Jason Foo, CEO of BBD Perfect Storm, the creative agency that helped to develop Etihad’s campaign. “This campaign is about inspiring, celebrating and offering great choices to all. It’s a rallying call. Those that choose well, live well.”

Global Eagle Secures Rights to Offer UNO on Seatback IFE

Global Eagle announced it is working with Mattel to develop a video game version of the card game UNO for in-flight entertainment systems. Global Eagle says the digital version of the game will debut on airline seatback systems during 2019. “Mattel is a world-class, global learning, development and play company. We are proud to partner with Mattel to expand the breadth of the entertainment portfolio for children on board flights worldwide,” said Per Norén, Global Eagle’s president.
