BA Trials PressReader’s Digital Titles in Lounges and in Flight

British Airways has partnered with PressReader to launch a trial giving customers access to more than 7,000 digital magazines and newspapers on board and in airport lounges. The trial will run into the new year, offering publications in 63 languages for free to BA passengers in 156 countries. Customers can access the digital versions of the magazines and newspapers using the PressReader smartphone app. “In the digital age, customers consume news and entertainment in a variety of different ways, so we hope this trial will help us to further understand our customers’ needs,” said Carolina Martinoli, British Airways’ director of Brand and Customer Experience.

digEcor Forms Retrofit Partnership with JADE Ahead of Rockwell IFE Acquisition

digEcor has entered a partnership with Jamco Aero Design and Engineering (JADE) that will see JADE carry out retrofit programs involving digEcor’s cabin technology products in the Asia Pacific region. The partnership will likely be extended to new products once digEcor completes its acquisition of Rockwell Collins’ IFE solutions. Rockwell confirmed the news of the acquisition in a formal statement and digEcor hopes the deal will be finalized by the end of this year.

Air Transat Improves PaxEx Offer for Kids

Air Transat has revamped its Air Transat Kids Club with the addition of new meals and a new Kids Club livery on one of its aircraft. Passengers aged between two and 11 on transatlantic flights will be served new meals including mac and cheese with apple sauce, cookies and juice, free of charge, if they order at least 72 hours before departure. The new livery has been painted on one of Air Transat’s Airbus A321s and features a smiley face and googly eyes on the front of the fuselage.

China Southern Announces It Will Quit SkyTeam

China Southern Airlines confirmed today it will be quitting the SkyTeam airline alliance as of January 1, 2019. The move opens the possibility for China Southern to become a member of the oneworld alliance alongside American Airlines Group, which spent $200 million to acquire a minority stake in the carrier last year. Oneworld said in a statement that its members will be assessing what the implications may be for the alliance, given China Southern's announcement.

Singapore Airlines Finds Premium-Economy Tickets on US-Bound Flights Are a Tougher Sell

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is finding that premium-economy tickets on nonstop flights to the US are a tougher sell than business-class fares. SIA’s executive vice-president of Commercial, Mak Swee Wah, said some markets were not “entirely familiar” with its premium-economy product. “We need to continue to stimulate and encourage the market to consider this product, initially with very attractive pricing,” he said. “I think people will see that even at prices which we offer, it is a good product to purchase because it is a very long flight.”

Saudia Launches Taqnia’s UON In-Flight Connectivity

Saudi Arabian Airlines has launched Taqnia Space’s UON dual Ku/Ka-band in-flight connectivity solution on flights between Riyadh and Geneva. UON was developed in collaboration with Eutelsat, Jamco, iDirect, Axinom and SITONAIR to give passengers access to the Internet, live TV streaming and telephone services using their own mobile devices. Taqnia’s CEO, Abdullah Al-Osaimi, said the system’s launch means “airlines around the world will be able to offer their passengers high-throughput connectivity services that are currently provided in a limited scale by few airlines in North America.”

ANA Highlights Cuisine From Japan’s Chugoku and Shikoku Regions

All Nippon Airways has launched a new in-flight menu to celebrate the cuisine from the Chugoku and Shikoku regions. ANA will also offer a selection of sakes from the regions inside its lounges at Tokyo’s Narita and Haneda airports, and Osaka’s Kansai International Airport. “By highlighting the culture and dishes from Chugoku [and] Shikoku over the coming six months, we aim to bring the joys of Japanese cuisine to new audiences while also helping the region recover from its recent typhoon,” said Seiichi Takahashi, ANA’s senior vice-president.
