Panasonic Partners With Raleigh & Drake for Destination-Based Content on NEXT Platform

Panasonic Avionics has selected Raleigh & Drake as its exclusive discovery platform partner. Panasonic will integrate Raleigh & Drake’s platform into its own NEXT in-flight entertainment platform, enabling passengers to book tours and activities during a flight. The discovery platform is powered by “influencers who resonate with the key target audience of millennials.” The partnership will see the NEXT platform deliver destination-based recommendations from experts and locals. “By partnering with Raleigh & Drake, we are able to curate compelling destination experiences for our customers and their passengers,” said Julie Lichty, head of Digital Services and Solutions for Panasonic Avionics.

Royal Air Maroc to Join oneworld Alliance

Royal Air Maroc will become the latest airline to join the oneworld alliance. The Moroccan flag carrier is expected to become the 14th oneworld member in mid-2020, and its regional subsidiary, Royal Air Maroc Express, will become an affiliate member at the same time. Oneworld CEO Rob Gurney said the North African carrier’s membership will give the alliance access to its extensive intra-African, transatlantic and European routes.

El Al Selects Bruce Aerospace LED Lighting for Retrofit on Boeing 737-800 Fleet

El Al has selected Bruce Aerospace to supply the LED cabin lighting system on board its existing Boeing 737-800 fleet. The Israeli flag carrier opted for the company’s “Bi-Color” system due to its existing STC certification on Boeing 737-800s and its “plug and play” installation process, with the LED fixtures able to be installed using existing wiring and controls. El Al also selected Bruce Aerospace’s drop-in replacements for reading lights, galley and entry lights, power supply unit lights, exit signs and identifiers, and lavatory lighting.

Ethiopian Airlines to Help Ghana Launch New Flag Carrier

Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement with the government of Ghana to develop a new flag carrier for the country. Ghanaian Aviation Minister Joseph Adda and Ethiopian CEO Tewolde Gebremariam signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the new airline in early 2019. The final ownership structure of the unnamed carrier still has to be determined, but Adda said that Ghana’s government would not seek to hold more than a 10% stake. Ghana has not had a national carrier since the collapse of Ghana International in 2010.

Aircom’s IFE Systems Approved by Airbus as Retrofit Solution

Aerkomm subsidiary Aircom Pacific has signed an agreement with Airbus to make its AERKOMMK++ in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) system available for retrofit on Airbus commercial aircraft. The system will be available to install once it has been certified with design organization approval by Airbus and has obtained the relevant certifications from aviation regulators. “Now that our IFEC system will have an approved retrofit solution by Airbus, we expect that the aviation industries in countries such as China will be more likely to accept our IFEC products,” said Jeffrey Wun, CEO of Aerkomm.

Delta Extends Pre-Select Meal Program to All Long-Haul Business-Class Passengers

Delta Air Lines has extended its pre-select meal program to Delta One business-class customers. The rollout follows a launch on selected flights that began in June and expanded in September. Delta said the service has proven to be very popular. It will now be available on all outbound and inbound routes with Delta One between the US and Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and South America, and some long-haul domestic routes.

The AFA Is Taking Action Over Extreme Cabin Temperatures

In July, the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) released 2Hot2Cold, a mobile app that both crew and passengers can use to record extreme cabin temperatures. The data collected is intended to support a petition the AFA submitted to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) requesting it create a rule to keep temperatures within acceptable levels. According to Taylor Garland, a spokesperson for the AFA, the DOT tarmac delay rule stipulates airlines keep the temperature comfortable, “But doesn’t define what ‘comfortable’ means.”
