WOW air Cuts Jobs and Will Reduce Fleet by Nearly Half

WOW air has cut 111 jobs and will drastically scale back its operations, including reducing its fleet from 20 to 11 aircraft. The Icelandic low-cost carrier said it will return all four of its wide-body Airbus A330s, which are used on some transatlantic routes and on its newly launched service to India. It will also sell four A321s for $10 million in an effort to raise cash. The downsizing means some passengers with WOW air tickets for travel next year won’t be making the trip, but the airline did not say which routes would be cut.

Virgin Galactic Reaches Space

Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo spacecraft successfully traveled more than 50 miles above the Mojave Desert in California on Thursday morning, bringing the company one step closer to making commercial spaceflight a reality. The SpaceShipTwo craft, named VSS Unity, reached speeds of up to 2,200 miles per hour, about 2.9 times the speed of sound, to reach an altitude of 51.4 miles above the earth’s surface, surpassing the FAA’s definition of where space begins. “Today, as I stood among a truly remarkable group of people with our eyes on the stars, we saw our biggest dream and our toughest challenge to date fulfilled,” said Richard Branson, Virgin Galactic’s founder.

Entertain Yours-Elf: BA Spreads Festive Cheer With Holiday IFE Channel

British Airways has added a selection of holiday content to its in-flight entertainment (IFE) system. The Festive Cheer category features TV episodes, audiobooks, music and films, including the two most popular Christmas titles available on the airline’s IFE last year: The Holiday and Elf. “Alongside popular film favorites, we’ve also got hilarious comedy, interesting documentaries and rousing carols,” said Carolina Martinoli, British Airways' director of Brand and Customer Experience.

KLM Opens Crown Lounge at Schiphol

KLM has unveiled its new Crown Lounge at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Located between the airport’s E and F piers, the new facility is aimed at KLM’s premium long-haul travelers on non-Schengen flights and will double in size by next summer when it fully opens. “KLM aims to offer the most attractive lounge in the world; a destination in itself,” said Boet Kreiken, KLM’s executive vice-president, Customer Experience. “The new lounge concept ties in seamlessly with KLM’s strategy which is to provide the ultimate hospitality experience, innovation and perfect customer service.”

Seat-Side Views: Renacen’s 3DSeatMapVR Elevates Flight Booking

Renacen’s 3DSeatMapVR solution integrates a visualization engine into an airline’s website so that customers can scope out a 360-degree, 3-D view of their selected seat before booking. Emirates was the first airline to sign on, launching a 3-D model of its three-class-configured Airbus A380 in May. “Hardly anyone plans to book a hotel room without first knowing what it’s like,” said Diego de Alcalá Cachero Rodríguez, CEO of Renacen. “But airlines … are not using the full potential of technology to showcase their products.”

Republic Engineers Will Buy Aerkomm IFEC Shipsets

Republic Engineers Maldives, a Singapore-based contracting company with close relationships to Asian airlines based in Singapore, has signed a purchase agreement with Aerkomm subsidiary Aircom Telecom. Under the terms of the deal, Republic Engineers will buy a minimum of 10 shipsets of the AERKOMM K++ in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) system with an option to purchase an additional 30 shipsets. “Republic Engineers’ commitment marks our first commercial sale of the AERKOMM K++ system … we are confident that other sales will follow,” said Jeffrey Wun, CEO of Aerkomm.

Got Game: Ryanair to Sell Tickets to Euro Sporting Events

Ryanair has started selling tickets for Spanish and French soccer league games on its website through a partnership with Coras. The low-cost carrier’s Ryanair Tickets service allows fans to buy tickets for Spanish La Liga games featuring, Atlético Madrid, Espanyol and Málaga, as well as Toulouse FC in France’s Ligue 1. “Travel plans increasingly start with the purchase of an event ticket,” said Mark McLaughlin, CEO of Coras. “Ryanair Tickets offers customers a more convenient and personalized experience to purchase the best event tickets across Europe.”
