Nigerian LCC Places Africa’s Biggest-Ever Boeing Aircraft Order

Green Africa Airways announced a commitment for as many as 100 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, worth up to $11.7 billion at list prices. The deal, which includes 50 firm orders and 50 options, is the largest-ever Boeing aircraft order from an African carrier. Nigeria-based Green Africa Airways plans to launch commercial operations in the near future. “This landmark deal takes us much closer to our long-held dream of building a world-class airline that will unlock a new realm of positive possibilities for millions of customers,” said Babawande Afolabi, the airline’s founder, and CEO.

BA Partners With SkyLights for VR Cabin Tours

British Airways has launched a virtual reality experience at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 in collaboration with SkyLights, a participant in IAG’s Hangar 51 accelerator program. BA hopes the initiative will encourage more customers to upgrade to its Club World business-class fares after they try out the virtual tour of the cabin, which includes 360-degree views of the seats, bedding and dining options.

WOW to Sell Aircraft to Air Canada

WOW air will make another reduction to its fleet by selling some of its aircraft to Air Canada in January. The decision was made amid the Icelandic low-cost carrier’s ongoing negotiations with US-based private equity firm Indigo Partners, which agreed to invest an undisclosed sum in the airline last month. In a statement, WOW air said the sale will improve its liquidity by more than $12 million and is part of an “ongoing restructuring” that would ensure “maximum utilization” of its remaining fleet.

Saudi LCC Flyadeal Signs Order for Up to 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8s

Flyadeal has placed an order for up to 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, worth as much as $5.9 billion at list prices. The deal includes a firm order for 30 MAX 8 aircraft plus options for another 20. The Saudi Arabian Airlines low-cost carrier subsidiary said the 737 MAXs will “support domestic growth and potential international expansion.”

Singapore Airlines Expands Meal Pre-Order Program to All Flights

Singapore Airlines has expanded its pre-order meal program to allow passengers traveling in suites, first class and business class to choose their main course three weeks ahead of time. SIA said it is the first airline to offer such a service across its entire network and that it has plans to introduce it to premium economy customers in the near future.

Care Package: Immfly Steers Airlines Toward Increased IFE Engagement

Immfly Care offers three tiers of service for airlines using Immfly’s in-flight entertainment (IFE) platform. Customers in each tier benefit from either quarterly, bimonthly or monthly “steering committees” to come up with ways of increasing passenger engagement. For example, Immfly worked with XL Airways to implement a Black Friday deal that resulted in a 139 percent increase in sales. Immfly Active, a new monitoring and content management portal announced at this year’s APEX EXPO, will allow airlines to see for themselves how these initiatives are working.

Vinci Airports Agrees to Buy Majority Stake in Gatwick

Vinci Airports has agreed to buy a controlling stake in London’s Gatwick Airport for £2.9 billion. The deal, which comes one week after the airport was brought to a standstill by a series of drone sightings, will see a consortium led by the US investment fund Global Infrastructure Partners sell a majority stake of 50.01%. Gatwick will be the largest in Vinci’s portfolio of 46 airports spread across 12 countries.
