Crystal Cabin Award 2019 Shortlist Revealed

Hamburg Aviation today revealed the 2019 Crystal Cabin Award shortlist. It features 94 submissions from 22 different countries – a record high for the sixth consecutive year. The total number of submissions surpassed 100 for the first time in the history of the award. The ceremony will be held at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce this year.

digEcor Rebrands as Burrana After Finalizing Collins Aerospace IFE Acquisition

digEcor announced yesterday that it completed its acquisition of Collins Aerospace’s in-flight entertainment (IFE) business on January 18. The news marks the end of a process that began before Rockwell Collins was acquired by United Technologies in 2018. The company has a new name, Burrana, an indigenous Australian word meaning “to fly.”

Turkish Airlines Selects Stelia Aerospace for New Business-Class Seats

Turkish Airlines has selected Stelia Aerospace to supply business-class seats for its 25 Boeing 787-9s and 25 Airbus A350-900s, with deliveries scheduled to begin this summer. The lie-flat seats will be deployed in a 1-2-1 layout and will offer direct-aisle access, 44 inches of pitch, 18-inch video HD displays and adjustable privacy dividers. Stelia said the interior trimmings feature alcantara padding, a material commonly used in the interiors of sports cars.

IMG’s Sport 24 to Screen German Soccer Bonanza at 35,000 Feet

IMG’s Sport 24 and Sport 24 Extra in-flight entertainment channels will screen six German soccer league games between January 25 and 27. During the last weekend of the month, passengers on more than 700 aircraft globally (including Lufthansa) can watch live Bundesliga games including current champions Bayern Munich against VfB Stuttgart and league leaders Borussia Dortmund against Hannover 96. “This weekend, Sport 24 takes our league to new heights, giving fans traveling across the world increased access to the highest scoring top-flight league in Europe,” said Bundesliga International CEO Robert Klein.

Government Shutdown: One in 10 TSA Agents Are Not Turning Up to Work

Unscheduled absenteeism among TSA agents at US airports rose to a record 10% on Sunday, rising from a previous high of 7% a day earlier. The agency said many of its staff, who are not being paid because of the shutdown, are not turning up to work because of financial hardships. Despite the absences, the TSA said nearly all the 1.78 million passengers screened on Sunday faced normal security wait times of 30 minutes or less.

Bangkok Airways CEO Resigns After Being Fined for Stock Manipulation

Bangkok Airways CEO Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth has resigned after Thai regulators banned him from holding executive positions and fined him for manipulating the airline’s share price. Prasarttong-Osoth has also relinquished his posts as director, vice chairman and chairman of the executive management committee. Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission imposed combined civil penalties of $15.7 million on Prasarttong-Osoth, his daughter and his executive secretary.

JFK Gets Green Light to Generate 10MW of Solar Energy

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s (PANYNJ) plan to proceed with a renewable solar power project at John F. Kennedy International Airport has been approved by the New York State Public Service Commission. PANYNJ plans to create on-site solar facilities at JFK capable of generating 10 megawatts of electricity. The project is part of the agency’s interim target to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2025 and long-term reduction goal of 80% by 2050.
