American Airlines Hits the Right Note With Apple Music Access

Starting this Friday, passengers on domestic American Airlines flights equipped with in-flight connectivity powered by Viasat will be able to access their Apple Music accounts and stream more than 50 million songs, playlists and music videos free of charge. As well as being able to listen to Apple Music’s exclusive content, such as in-depth artist interviews, passengers can also tune in to American Airlines’ city-themed playlists.

United Airlines Offers Live In-Flight TV for Free

Starting today, United Airlines will offer more than 100 channels of live TV for free across 211 DIRECTV-enabled aircraft in its fleet. The announcement was made ahead of this Sunday’s Super Bowl, which passengers will be able to watch live gate-to-gate on seatback monitors or by streaming wirelessly on personal devices. United said the multimillion-dollar investment will benefit 29 million passengers this year.

APEX TECH January 2019: Takeaways From Day One

Day One of APEX TECH started with a launch customer announcement from SmartSky Networks and continued with updates from APEX's various working groups on ad delivery, the MPEG-DASH streaming format, security requirements for HD and HDR content, emerging codecs and content delivery. The working groups called for industry experts to participate in their discussions as they draft proposals for standards in these areas. The day wrapped up with an APEX Awards ceremony and a networking reception on the pool deck of the Los Angeles Airport Marriott.

JetSuiteX Revealed as Launch Customer for SmartSky 4G Connectivity

At APEX TECH yesterday, Alex Wilcox, CEO of JetSuiteX, announced that the private jet company, which also operates scheduled flights, will be the launch customer of SmartSky Networks’ 4G air-to-ground (ATG) connectivity. The service, which will be complimentary for JetSuiteX passengers, will provide 10 times the speed of legacy airborne connections and is expected to go live in the fourth quarter of this year. “Our customers wanted more and there was no other technology to perform this,” Wilcox said.

Aer Lingus to Deploy Lie-Flat Seats on Forthcoming Airbus A321s

Aer Lingus will offer lie-flat seats on board its forthcoming Airbus A321LRs, according to an internal presentation obtained by Australian Business Traveller. The Irish carrier will install 16 Thompson Aero Vantage business-class seats customized by Factorydesign to include more personal stowage and space in a staggered layout on each aircraft. Aer Lingus expects to receive the first of 14 A321LRs in June, with three more due before the end of 2019.

Will Boeing Build a 797?

Boeing executives are coming close to deciding whether to invest an estimated $15 billion to develop a new jet dubbed the 797. The aircraft would be Boeing’s first all-new design since the 787 Dreamliner was unveiled in 2004, and the company’s board is expected to make a decision by the end of March. If developed, the Boeing jet would be designed for economical flying on mid-range routes and could create a lucrative market for low-cost carriers to offer more transatlantic and transcontinental routes.

Cathay Pacific’s Locally Inspired In-Flight Menu

Cathay Pacific has introduced new meals inspired by local dishes on flights departing from Hong Kong for passengers across all classes. The “Hong Kong Flavors” concept will be updated every three months and consists of separate menus for first-class, business-class, premium economy and economy-class passengers. Braised abalone with flower shiitake and choy sum-layered bean curd will be offered in first class, roasted duck with lai fun rice noodles in soup in business class, baked seafood rice with tomato sauce in premium economy, and Hong Kong-style seafood curry rice in economy class.
