Germania Files for Bankruptcy

Germania has filed for bankruptcy and grounded all flights with immediate effect after it failed to secure short-term financing to meet liquidity needs. “We very much regret that, as a consequence, we had no choice but to file for bankruptcy,” said managing director Karsten Balke. The Berlin-based low-cost carrier, which flew more than four million passengers per year on scheduled and chartered short- and medium-haul flights, blamed fuel prices and currency fluctuations as two factors.

Is VR IFE Still a Long Way Off Going Mainstream?

Is virtual reality set to become the next generation of in-flight entertainment? Not yet, argues Grant Martin, loyalty editor for Skift and a developer of the technology for a pilot test with United Airlines in 2017. Writing for Forbes, Martin argues a combination of technical, business and sociological hurdles will prevent VR from becoming a mainstream IFE solution in the near future. “The biggest challenge to incorporating VR entertainment into an airplane cabin is the experience around pushing the content to users,” says Martin. “Many VR headsets or other head mounted displays haven't got that computing power integrated – they're simply a display looking for an input.”
