[PHOTOS] Bombardier Launches CRJ550: The World’s First Three-Class 50-Seat Aircraft

United Airlines will be the launch customer for Bombardier’s CRJ550 regional jet. With 50 aircraft on order, the airline expects its regional parter GoJet to be operating 25 of the aircraft before the end of 2019. United has opted to configure its CRJ550s with 10 first-class seats, 20 Economy Plus seats and 20 economy-class seats. The aircraft will feature a self-serve beverage and snack station for first-class customers.

Boeing to Invest in Aerion’s Supersonic Jet Project

Boeing will invest in supersonic jet developer Aerion and will provide additional support, including engineering, manufacturing and flight-testing resources. The startup, founded by Texas billionaire Robert Bass, plans to launch the first supersonic test flight for its 12-seat AS2 supersonic business jet in 2023. The aircraft would be able to reach speeds of up to 1,000 miles per hour and would cut transatlantic flight times by up to three hours. Each aircraft has a list price of $120 million.

EASA Approves FACC Luggage Space Upgrade System for Airbus A320s

FACC has obtained supplemental type certification from EASA for installation of its Passenger Luggage Space Upgrade cabin interior system on board Airbus A320 family aircraft. FACC says the luggage system increases stowage space by 67% and reduces cabin weight. The stowage compartments can fit up to five carry-on items and the retrofit can be installed within a few hours. “Another major advantage is easier and faster handling, resulting in shorter boarding times and cost savings,” said Robert Machtlinger, CEO of FACC.

New York’s Airports Now Offer Live Wait Time Tracking

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has launched a live tracking tool to show the security screening and taxi wait times at JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty and New York Stewart airports.The project is a collaboration between PANYNJ, the TSA and BlipTrack, a developer of queue management software, which has also worked on similar projects with Iceland’s Keflavik International, Amsterdam Schiphol and Manchester airports.

Virgin Australia Appoints New CEO

Virgin Australia has named Paul Scurrah as its new CEO and managing director, to replace John Borghetti on March 25. Scurrah has previously served in executive roles at DP World Australia and Queensland Rail. He has also worked at Qantas and was involved in the establishment of Regional Express Airlines. “Paul’s significant leadership in driving transformation and improving customer satisfaction in complex and challenging businesses is highly impressive,” said Elizabeth Bryan, Virgin Australia’s chairman.




Astronics AeroSat Obtains EASA STC for FliteStream

Astronics’ wholly owned subsidiary, Astronics AeroSat, has received a supplemental type certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for its next-generation FliteStream SATCOM in-flight connectivity system. “This additional certification enables Astronics to offer our global customer base another total wireless connectivity hardware solution that includes installation plus all structural, antenna and radome system components,” said Matthew Harrah, president of Astronics AeroSat.

Alaska Airlines Unveils Special-Edition Captain Marvel Livery

Alaska Airlines has unveiled a special-edition livery on one of its Boeing 737s. The paint job promotes the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, which will debut in cinemas on March 8. The film stars Brie Larson, who plays a former US Air Force fighter pilot now helping to keep Earth safe from intergalactic threats. "We're excited to showcase a pilot who's risen to superhero status, an image that embodies strength and confidence and inspires future aviators across our expansive network to go further,” said Natalie Bowman, Alaska Airlines' managing director of Marketing and Advertising.
