SilkAir to Install Thompson Aero Lie-Flat Seats on Boeing 737 MAX 8s

Singapore Airlines regional subsidiary SilkAir said it will install lie-flat seats on board its existing fleet of five Boeing 737 MAX 8s and additional 32 aircraft on order. The airline will start installing the Thompson Aero seats in May next year as part of its $74.4-million investment ahead of a planned merger between SilkAir and SIA. SilkAir said the seats will be deployed in a staggered, forward-facing 1-2-1 layout.

Delta Extends LSG Sky Chefs Contract

LSG Sky Chefs announced on Friday that it has extended its catering contract with Delta Air Lines for another four years. The agreement covers full-tray menus, premium dining and last-mile logistics services for approximately 850 flights per day, at 38 stations in eight countries: Belgium, Italy, Mexico, Panama, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea and United States. The LSG Group subsidiary has been partnering with Delta globally since 2005.

Viasat Orders Third ViaSat-3 From Boeing for Asia-Pacific Coverage

Viasat has placed an order with Boeing for a third ViaSat-3 satellite that will cover the Asia-Pacific region. The satellite is intended to cover the Asia-Pacific region and is the last one required for the ViaSat-3 constellation to be able to offer global Ka-band coverage. CEO Mark Dankberg also said the launch of the company’s first ViaSat-3 satellite, which is expected to cover the Americas, has been pushed back several months to early 2021.

Helsinki Airport Introduces “Aukio”

A forest-inspired plaza designed to give passengers a taste of Finland forms the centerpiece of Helsinki Airport’s newly opened 33,400m² (360,000ft²) extension, nicknamed “Aukio.” The plaza is surrounded by a 360° LED screen that is 75m (246ft) in width and 2m (6.6ft) in height that showcases Finnish landscapes filmed in Koli, Olos, Luosto, Yövesi in Saimaa and the Kalevankangas nature reserve in Mikkeli. As part of the expansion, airport operator Finavia has also introduced new modern security controls and an updated food, beverage and retail offering.

American Airlines Introduces New Amenity Kits in Premium Cabins

American Airlines has introduced new amenity kits for passengers in its premium economy, business-and first-class cabins. The kits will debut in mid-February and have been designed in collaboration with This Is Ground, Athletic Propulsion Labs and STATE Bags.The products from Allies of Skin, Zenology and Baxter of California, included in the kit will vary depending on cabin, however each will contain an eye mask, earplugs, a toothbrush and toothpaste.

British Airways Revamps Online Help Center

British Airways has launched a new online help center on its website to assist customers who want to change bookings and find out about consumer rights in the case of delayed flights. BA says the site will speed up resolution time by connecting passengers with relevant departments instead of having to contact the general customer relations team. “The new section of the website means our customers can clearly identify where to send their enquiry and, as it is immediately delivered to the appropriate team, we are able to deal with it faster,” said Finola O’Sullivan, BA’s general manager of Global Customer Care.

ANA Eyes Growth in Asia After PAL Investment

All Nippon Airways said it plans to use its airline partnerships and its own network expansion to tap the Asia-Pacific market, following its acquisition of a 9.5% stake in Philippine Airlines. The airline’s president and CEO Yuji Hirako said equity investments by its parent company ANA Holdings in other carriers would help the airline to “solidify” its strategy in the region. “We're going to establish routes that we will operate on our own, and through partnerships. We'll be able to merge or integrate each other's strategies, so that we can attack this market together more strongly,” he said.
