Crystal Cabin Award 2019 Finalists Announced

Twenty-four airline passenger experience industry innovations have been chosen as finalists for the 13th annual Crystal Cabin Award. Leading the pack this year are Collins Aerospace and Panasonic Avionics, with four nominations each. The winners will be announced at a ceremony during Aircraft Interiors Expo, after the finalists pitch their concepts to an expert jury in person.

Gogo Expects New Investment and Wants to Play a Role in IFC Consolidation

Gogo said it expects to secure a large investment later this year and plans to close its latest funding round in May, said Oakleigh Thorne, the company’s CEO, during a quarterly earnings call. Gogo’s business aviation unit continues to outperform its commercial aviation activities. Total revenue for 2018 increased by 27.8% year-on-year to $893.8 million and net losses decreased by 6% compared to the previous year. Thorne also said that he believed the in-flight connectivity industry would benefit from consolidation and that Gogo “would like to play a role in that consolidation from a position of strength.”

Immfly Sets Up Asia Office in Hong Kong

Immfly announced it is expanding its global presence with an office in Asia. The Spain-based in-flight entertainment and connectivity company described the move as “a natural step” that will enable it “to better serve aviation customers in the region” and that it has already started contracting personnel in Hong Kong. “It is clear Immfly can actively support Asian aviation customers as they look to benefit from a competitive edge with innovative operational solutions and profitable IFE strategies,” said Jimmy Martinez, co-founder of Immfly. “Establishing a local presence in Asia is part of our strategy as we expand and develop our relationships in key markets.”

[PHOTOS] Austrian Airlines Unveils 80s Retro Livery on an Airbus A320

Austrian Airlines has become the latest carrier to unveil a retro livery on one of its aircraft. The livery originates from the 1980s and has been painted on an Airbus A320. The design features an angular chevron, gray aircraft belly and Austria’s red-and-white flag on the aircraft’s tailfin. British Airways also unveiled two retro liveries this month as part of its centennial celebrations.

Air Vanuatu Orders Four Airbus A220s

Air Vanuatu has placed a firm order for four Airbus A220s. The deal comprises two A220-100s and two A220-300s, which will be used on 26 domestic routes and for international routes with destinations across Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and New Caledonia. “We are proud to be the launch airline in the South Pacific of the best-in-class Airbus A220,” said Air Vanuatu’s CEO, Derek Nice.

Porcher Industries Partners With Meggitt for 5G Radome

France-based Porcher Industries is developing a satellite communications radome in partnership with Meggitt. The radome will support the demands for improved 5G in-flight connectivity. Porcher Industries developed a bespoke glass-reinforced thermoplastic material for the base structural component, designed for optimized 5G air-to-ground transmissions.

Manchester Airport Trials 5G Network With Vodafone

Manchester Airport has become the first UK airport to offer 5G network access as part of a trial partnership with Vodafone. Vodafone has installed a 5G “blast pod” inside Terminal 1 that allows travelers to download movies and TV shows on their smartphones at speeds up to four times faster than 4G. “5G, with its fast speeds and quick response times, will make that quick and easy, even in busy locations,” said Vodafone UK CEO Nick Jeffery. “We are proud to be the first provider to bring 5G to an airport and will be adding more major travel hotspots to our 5G network throughout the year.”
