[PHOTOS] Brussels Airlines Unveils Revamped Airbus A330 Interiors

Brussels Airlines has unveiled details about the new cabins that will be retrofitted on its Airbus A330 fleet. The Lufthansa Group subsidiary is investing €10 million per aircraft to create completely new business-class, premium economy and economy-class cabins that were designed in collaboration with JPA Design. The first refurbished aircraft will be operational starting in April.

New Tool From Adaptive Enables Automatic Image Moderation

As an add-on to its mobile IFE and digital press solution, ACES, Adaptive has developed an Automated Content Moderation tool to exclude nudity and other sensitive images from digital press content. Using artificial intelligence, the tool scans each image in an airline’s library of digital publications and outputs a percentage-based score based on the amount of nudity detected. The tool automatically identifies images that are above the percentage threshold set by the airline and replaces them with a stationary page. The company has been giving demos of the tool at Aviation Festival Asia this week.

British Airways Orders Up to 42 Boeing 777-9s

British Airways has placed an order for up to 42 Boeing 777-9s, worth $18.6 billion at list prices. The deal comprises eight firm orders plus options for an additional 24 aircraft. The wide-body jets will come with 325 seats in a four-class configuration and will gradually replace 14 aging 747-200s and four 777-200s starting 2022, until 2025.

ANA Selects Bluebox Wow for Turboprop Fleet

All Nippon Airways has selected Bluebox Aviation’s Bluebox Wow wireless in-flight entertainment solution for its fleet of 13 Bombardier Q400 turboprops that operate on regional routes in Japan. The stand-alone lunchbox-sized system is capable of streaming up to 1.6 terabytes of movie, TV, audio, game and other digital content to passengers’ personal devices. “It is an honor to be selected by this award-winning airline, and we are looking forward to delivering engaging IFE content to ANA’s passengers’ devices through Bluebox Wow,” said Kevin Clark, CEO, Bluebox Aviation.

Dutch Government Buys Stake in Air France–KLM

The Dutch government has bought a 12.68% stake in Air France–KLM in a deal worth $774 million. The country’s finance minister Wopke Hoekstra said, “Buying this stake ensures we have a seat at the table.” France’s government accused the Netherlands of acting like an “unfriendly” corporate raider. French president Emmanuel Macron urged the Dutch government to “clarify its intentions,” while finance minister Bruno Le Maire described the move as “incomprehensible.” Shares in Air France-KLM were down by 15% at one point following news of the investment.

Automated Passport Control Uptake Doubled in 2018

Nearly half of all air travelers (44%) used automated passport control kiosks in 2018, according to SITA’s 2019 Passenger IT Insights report. The number is more than double the 21% recorded in 2017. SITA’s report found passengers were 3.85% more satisfied when they used self-service eGates to verify their ID, compared to when interacting with an immigration official. “One of the standout findings of our report this year is that at every point in the journey, where passengers use technology, the rate of satisfaction is higher,” said Matthys Serfontein, president, Air Travel Solutions, SITA.

SWISS Renews Gate Gourmet Contract Until 2022

Swiss International Air Lines has renewed its long-term catering agreement with Gate Gourmet until 2022. Operating from Zurich and Geneva, Gate Gourmet will continue designing and developing meals across SWISS’ first, business and economy classes. "We are very proud of our long-term relationship with the national carrier of our home country and we are delighted they have put their trust in us until 2022," said gategroup CEO Xavier Rossinyol.
