Ethiopian Airlines Crash: China and Indonesia Ground Boeing 737 MAX 8s

China’s and Indonesia’s aviation regulators have grounded Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft operated by airlines in both countries. The decisions were made in response to the Ethiopian Airlines MAX 8 plane crash, which occurred minutes after takeoff on Sunday and killed all 157 people on board flight ET302 from Addis Ababa, bound for Nairobi. The Civil Aviation Administration of China grounded nearly 100 MAX 8s, representing more than a quarter of the global fleet of the narrow-body jets. Boeing has delayed plans to unveil its new 777X jetliner this week. In October last year, a 737 MAX 8 operated by Indonesian budget carrier Lion Air crashed 13 minutes after takeoff.

Cybersecurity Professor Finds IFE Vulnerability on British Airways Flight

Hector Marco, an associate cybersecurity professor at the University of the West of Scotland, said he accidentally discovered a vulnerability that can affect certain in-flight entertainment systems. On board a British Airways Boeing 777 flight, Marco found that the IFE system’s USB interface allows third-party peripherals to be attached, such as a keyboard or mouse. This allowed Marco to create a buffer overflow in the IFE system’s chat app to produce a denial of service and possibly crash the software. However, he emphasized the vulnerability won’t compromise safety because the IFE system is isolated from the aircraft’s flight systems.
