Cathay Pacific Mines Data to Personalize Service to Premium Customers

Cathay Pacific Airways is making a renewed effort to analyze customer data so it can offer a more personalized service. The airline is tracking the travel habits of its high-spending premium passengers across 23 categories of behavior such as when they want their bed laid flat. Cathay Pacific CEO Rupert Hogg said the exercise is helping the airline “understand what people like and what they don’t like.”

Boeing CEO Writes a Letter to Airlines and Passengers

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg wrote an open letter to airlines, passengers and the aviation community about the recent 737 MAX 8 crashes involving Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air. He said Boeing is “united” with its airline customers, international regulators and government authorities in its efforts to support the most recent investigations, understand the facts and prevent future tragedies. “We're taking actions to fully ensure the safety of the 737 MAX. We also understand and regret the challenges for our customers and the flying public caused by the fleet's grounding,” said Muilenburg.

Starlux Airlines Firms Airbus A350 Order

Taiwanese upstart carrier Starlux Airlines has firmed an Airbus A350 order that was announced at last year’s Farnborough International Airshow. As part of the deal, Starlux is buying 12 A350-1000s and five A350-900s. The airline plans to use the aircraft for long-haul routes from Taipei to Europe, North America and select destinations in Asia-Pacific. “We are positive that with the [A350], we will be able to spread our wings to further destinations, bringing our best-in-class services to more people over the world in the near future,” said Starlux founder KW Chang.

Flame Distribution Inks Deal With Raydar Media

Flame Distribution announced a new partnership with Raydar Media last week. The deal gives Flame exclusive TV rights in the MENA region and transport rights worldwide. “The general feedback I am getting now is that TV is becoming more important than even the latest movies,” Thomas Gould, Flame’s VP of Sales, told APEX Media. “Research shows [that] around 90% of airlines will have kids’ content on board, so … the diversity and quality of Raydar’s kids’ titles appealed to us a lot.”

Embraer CEO to Step Down After Boeing Tie-Up

Embraer CEO Paulo Cesar de Souza e Silva will step down on April 22, ending a two-year elected term. The decision comes after shareholders approved a wide-ranging tie-up with Boeing. “Paulo Cesar idealized the partnership with Boeing and led the negotiation process of the transaction that will bring Embraer and Brazil to a much more competitive and prominent level in the global aviation industry,” said Alexandre Silva, chairman of the Embraer board. Embraer’s next CEO is expected to be recruited externally and announced at the company’s annual general meeting in April.

Honeywell Aerospace Selects Air Esurfing as Exclusive Ka-Band Hardware Distributor in China

Honeywell has selected AirMedia Group subsidiary Air Esurfing (ARE) as the exclusive distributor for its JetWave satellite communications hardware in China. The partnership aims to increase the availability of Ka-band connectivity for passengers traveling with airlines originating in China. “This exciting cooperation with ARE gives Chinese airlines a competitive edge in a globalized market, providing them with hardware and connectivity that delivers in-flight Wi-Fi with in-office speed,” said Steven Lien, president, Asia Pacific, Honeywell Aerospace.

Singapore Airlines Partners With Wellness Brand

Singapore Airlines has partnered with Singapore-based wellness brand COMO Shambhala. Starting in the second half of this year, SIA will offer COMO Shambhala’s cuisine on board select flights. The parties will jointly develop healthy dishes that will be progressively made available in SIA’s Book the Cook service. A new menu featuring curated dishes will also be introduced across all classes.
