China Orders 300 Airbus Jets

China has agreed to buy 300 aircraft from Airbus, matching the country’s order for 300 Boeing jets in 2017. The deal was announced during a visit to Europe by China’s leader Xi Jinping and involves the country’s state buying agency, China Aviation Supplies Holding Company, placing orders for 290 A320s and 10 A350s, worth a combined $33.8 billion at list prices. “The conclusion of a big [aviation] contract ... is an important step forward and an excellent signal in the current context,” said French president Emmanuel Macron.

Harbour Air Selects magniX to Transition to All-Electric Seaplane Fleet

Harbour Air Seaplanes and magniX today announced a partnership to convert the airline’s seaplanes into an all-electric commercial fleet. The first aircraft to be converted will be a de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver and a test flight is expected to take place before the end of this year. Both companies are planning to receive certification by 2021 for the seaplanes – which will be powered by the magni500, a 750 horsepower all-electric motor – with a view to launching all-electric flights in 2022.

Astronics Launches Ambient Aircraft Interior Lighting System

Astronics PGA has introduced a new strip lighting system designed to provide flexible illumination options for aircraft seats and cabins. The Nuancia RGBW system allows aircraft manufacturers and airlines to program mood lighting that can accommodate more than 16 million colors, create preset color scenarios and preset color changes. “We’ve taken our existing ultra-reliable lighting products and re-engineered them to provide the industry’s smallest bend radius and closest set LEDs for a flexible, consistent color experience,” said Fabrice Berthelot, president of Astronics PGA.

Cathay to Buy HK Express, SCMP Reports

Cathay Pacific has agreed to buy HK Express, according to the South China Morning Post, but did not elaborate on the details. A spokesperson for Hong Kong’s biggest carrier declined to comment on the report, but the airline said on March 5 that it was in “active discussions” with HNA Group about an acquisition of HK Express.

Das Ist Nicht Düsseldorf: BA Flight Lands in Edinburgh by Mistake

Passengers on a British Airways flight destined for Düsseldorf yesterday received a big surprise when a “Welcome to Edinburgh” announcement was made upon landing. The flight was operated by German company WDL Aviation as part of a wet lease arrangement under the BA CityFlyer brand. BA said Flight 3271, which took off from London City Airport, flew 500 miles in the wrong direction because of incorrect paperwork submitted by WDL. The aircraft sat on the tarmac at Edinburgh for two-and-a-half-hours before flying on to Düsseldorf.

Singapore Airlines Expands Meal Pre-Ordering to Premium Economy Passengers

Singapore Airlines has announced plans to expand its pre-order meal service to passengers in its premium economy cabins and will offer diversified choices for specific meals. Starting May 1, customers will be able to select their main course from the in-flight menu via SIA’s website or mobile app at any time between three weeks and 24 hours before a scheduled departure. “We see personalization in in-flight dining offerings as being key to creating an even more memorable travel experience,” said Mak Swee Wah, SIA’s executive vice-president, Commercial.

Azul Selects SITAONAIR’s AIRCOM ADS-B Flight Tracking

Azul Linhas Aéreas has become the first airline in the Americas to use SITAONAIR’s AIRCOM FlightTracker. The system integrates Aireon’s space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data from FlightAware and will provide information on an aircraft’s position at least once per minute. SITAONAIR has now installed the FlightTracker capabilities on board the Brazilian low-cost carrier’s fleet of Airbus A320s, A330s, Embraer 190s and 195s and ATR 72-600s.
