Boeing Introduces Software Update for 737 MAX

Boeing has developed a software update for the Boeing 737 MAX concerning the aircraft’s Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), which is designed to automatically command a plane to pitch down if it senses an imminent stall. The update will see the addition of data from a second Angle of Attack (AOA) sensor, which measures the horizontal tilt of the airplane. Pilots must also complete 21 or more days of instructor-led courses and simulator training before flying the aircraft.

Collins Aerospace Tests SelfPass Biometric Solution

Collins Aerospace is testing its new cloud-native SelfPass solution at Bristol and Dublin airports. The solution enables single-token identity management by adding cameras equipped with the SelfPass software at major airport touchpoints such as check-in, bag drop, airline lounges, security and boarding gates, all of which can be accessed using facial recognition. JetBlue is also using the service at its boarding gates in John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 5.

What the Aircraft Interiors Industry Can Learn from an Art Exhibit by Google

Aircraft interiors designers are taking inspiration from Google’s Softwear exhibit by intentionally keeping technology in the background to maintain a homey feel inside cabins. Astronics’ wireless charging module can be embedded into a seat arm, and a touch-sensitive panel on a Collins Aerospace business-class seat could offer the functionality of physical buttons. “Our homes are becoming more minimal ... with technology integrating and blending into surfaces,” Maria Kafel-Bentkowska, CMF project head at PriestmanGoode, says. “Passengers are increasingly expecting that same understated domestic feel in the cabin.”

Athens Airport Testing Facial Recognition at Check-In and Security

Aegean Airlines passengers can now opt in for facial recognition at Athens Airport. Upon arrival, passengers who choose to use SITA’s Smart Path will be required to scan their passport and have their photo taken, but can breeze through checkpoints thereafter simply by scanning their face. SITA says existing common-use check-in kiosks and boarding gates can be integrated into the solution, opening up the possibility of offering the service to other airlines.

Finnair Business-Class Amenity Kits Merge Marimekko Designs With Sustainability

Finnair is introducing a new range of business-class amenities that will bear familiar designs from Marimekko, but with sustainability in mind: The previous plastic wrapping has been scrapped for cardboard and wax paper packaging and the slippers are made from PET plastic bottles. Finnair is also making lesser-used items such as razors, socks, combs, shawls and memory foam pillows available on demand. Finnair will roll out the new amenities on transcontinental flights on its Airbus A350 and A330 aircraft as of March 31, with plans to introduce two new bag designs every six months.
