APEX to Acquire Future Travel Experience

The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) has agreed to acquisition terms for the purchase of Future Travel Experience (FTE), bringing the global events, media and innovation hub company under APEX’s nonprofit direction. The acquisition will allow APEX to hit new levels of airline engagement and supplier participation while increasing the value the association provides to the entire air travel industry, both in-the-air and on-the-ground. APEX/IFSA CEO Joe Leader stated, “APEX with FTE will effectively double our size and scope to be a more powerful driving force for industry change and collaboration serving all of our global members.”

[PODCAST] Air Transat to Deploy Bluebox Wow Wireless IFE

Air Transat is to install the Bluebox Wow portable wireless streaming platform from Bluebox Aviation Systems across its mixed fleet to provide passengers with access to free in-flight entertainment. In the new APEX podcast, Air Transat’s VP In-Flight Services and Customer Experience, Dave Bourdages, discusses with director of APEX Media Maryann Simson how this move, along with other initiatives, is helping the carrier provide a harmonized passenger experience across multiple aircraft types.

ST Engineering Subsidiary to Acquire Newtec

ST Engineering subsidiary Singapore Technologies Engineering (Europe) Ltd has entered into a conditional share purchase agreement to acquire Newtec, a Belgium-based company in the satellite communications (satcom) industry, for €250 million. ST Engineering will continue to invest in Newtec in Belgium to position it as the Group’s European center for the satcom business. Commenting on the acquisition, COO of Panasonic Avionics Corporation Mark Jennings stated, “This investment by ST Engineering is an important milestone … Newtec’s modem has played a key role in our global Ku-band high throughput satellite service, and we have an aggressive plan to upgrade all remaining and future aircraft to this technology.”

Silver Atena and jetlite to Unveil Automated Cabin Lighting System at AIX

Silver Atena and jetlite will unveil a prototype of the jetlite controller, an automated cabin lighting system, at Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg next week. The stand-alone hardware device, developed by electronics supplier Silver Atena, calculates ideal lighting conditions using jetlite’s human-centric lighting approach. The goal of the company’s lighting algorithm, which is based on flight parameters such as route, direction and time zones crossed, is to reduce the effects of jet lag.

Big Data Drives FlightPath3D’s New Apps

FlightPath3D's new apps bring destination content up a notch by using big data to provide passengers and airlines with dynamic insights. The Favorite Places app lets passengers investigate any location for travel inspiration and the Where We Fly app displays flight information based on passenger searches that an airline can use to promote specific destinations and analyze flight demand. “The data gathered … can help an airline plan routes, rank destinations, and find out what’s important to passengers when booking a trip,” said Duncan Jackson, president, FlightPath3D.

New Projects for Mythopoeia on Air Greenland and Rossiya Airlines

Mythopoeia, a designer and manufacturer of cabin IT solutions, has completed the implementation of its low-cost wireless seatback streaming IFE system, Air Cloud, for Air Greenland’s sole Airbus A330-200. The technology stores files on each IFE display to create redundancy. The Dublin-based company will also implement reading light control and flight attendant-call button functionality for eight of Rossiya Airlines’ Boeing 747 aircraft, using its off-seat PowerStream solution.

Vanema to Reveal Octasmart Mattress for First-Class Suites at AIX

Vanema has applied the ultralight Octaspring technology to expand its product line from seat cushions to mattresses and pillows. The company will show the Octasmart mattress for first-class suites, as well as the Octasupport collection, to the public for the first time at Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg next week. The Octaspring seat cushions, which were on display at AIX 2018 will begin flying soon, according to Ieva Baradouska, head of Marketing and Communication at Studio Moderna, which owns the Octaspring brand.
