Airbus at AIX: American Airlines’ XL Overhead Bins, Settee Corner and the “Connected Experience”

Airbus began its Tuesday morning press conference with a timely announcement: American Airlines began scheduled flights with the first of its 100 new A321neo aircraft on order today, on its Phoenix–Orlando route. The aircraft are equipped with new cabin interiors, including wireless IFE, LED mood lighting and Airspace XL overhead luggage bins. Each bin accommodates up to four bags instead of the current three, thanks to the ability for them to be loaded on their sides instead of inserted flat.

[VIDEO] Panasonic Avionics Makes In-Flight Map, Wellness and Esports Announcements

Panasonic Avionics made announcement after announcement, including a new personalized in-flight 3-D map platform for its NEXT and X Series in-flight entertainment and connectivity systems, a launch customer for a wellness app, a deal with IMG to stream live esports on board aircraft. Arc, its new map app, will offer the same functionality as a conventional in-flight map application, but will be able to be integrate into other Panasonic Avionics NEXT services, including its Marketplace e-commerce platform, its Loyalty passenger personalization hub and its Insights analytics service.

AIM Altitude’s Social Zone Concept for Ultra Long-Haul Flights

AIM Altitude has unveiled a cabin concept the company believes will be at the heart of the ultra long-haul experience. ULTRAFLEX is a social zone that encourages passengers to get up and out of their seats, order a drink or grab a snack, chat with other passengers or even exercise. “We wanted to take our experience in designing bars, galleys and front-row monuments to see where we could go with this emerging market,” Ross Burns, group lead industrial designer, Cabin Interiors, AIM Altitude, told APEX Media. Key to the concept is flexible spaces that can multitask for an airline.

Adient and Collins to Supply Seats for Hawaiian Airlines Dreamliners

Hawaiian Airlines has been revealed as the launch customer of Adient Aerospace, a joint venture between Boeing and automotive seat manufacturer Adient, which became operational just six months ago. Adient Aerospace is set to supply its Ascent seating system in the premium cabin on board Hawaiian’s incoming 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which will enter service from 2021 on the carrier’s transpacific route network. The fleet’s main cabin features Collins Aerospace’s Aspire seats, which also feature in the main cabin of the airline’s growing number of Airbus A321neo aircraft.

Acro Launches New Series 6LC Seat, Explores Staggered Seating

The launch customer for Acro’s Series 6LC economy-class seat, which is designed for low-cost carriers and was shown to the public for the first time at AIX, will be revealed in the coming weeks. Acro is also gathering feedback on a staggered seating layout, which it is exploring in partnership with Airbus. “If [an airline] wanted Series 6 seats in an A320 aircraft, you could stagger them relatively easily. So we’re showing it to the industry to test the concept and see where it goes," Acro's SVP of Sales, Alan McInnes, told APEX Media.

Signal Lamp Entertainment Announces Airborne Interactive Acquisition

Signal Lamp Entertainment (SLE) announced it plans to buy Airborne Interactive. The acquisition will create a single entity capable of deploying an in-flight entertainment and connectivity system that can offer OEM-agnostic advertising and content distribution services. David Villarreal, managing partner at SLE, said the purchase will yield more than technological advancements: “[It] also allows us to assure airlines that we can provide a total solution – from idea to implementation.”

An Array of Connectivity Solutions at Astronics

Astronics showcased a slew of connectivity products at AIX, including its electronically steered array antenna developed in partnership with Phasor, an updated portable IFE system, as well as its exploration of Li-Fi technology for gatelink communications. The solid state electronically steered array antenna has one array for transmitting and receiving signals for mixed satellite networks. The company also unveiled a new portable IFE system, based on its previous Encompass all-in-one stand-alone solution and demonstrated a new application for Li-Fi, a method of transferring data via light.

IFSA Updates on EU Single Use Plastics Ban

IFSA, the International Flight Services Association, a more than 50 year old trade association representing dedicated to serving the needs of the onboard services industry has a robust Government Affairs and Education Committee (GAEC) that represents IFSA member interests to worldwide regulatory and legislative bodies toward the common goal for public health, safety and security. GAEC’s EU Task Force met in Hamburg to discuss key issues including the EU Single Use Plastics ban and food contact materials. The EU will ban single-use plastics, including plastic cutlery, plates, and straws, by 2021. The European Commission needs to clarify several major points of the directive including what food and drink containers will be considered as SUP.
