Boeing Issues Statement Following Ethiopian Airlines Crash Report

Boeing has released a statement in response to the findings of a preliminary report on Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302. The report, issued by Ethiopia’s Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), contains flight data recorder information indicating the airplane’s Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) was activated in response to erroneous angle of attack information – as was also the case during the Lion Air 610 flight. Boeing has developed a software update to MCAS, and an accompanying pilot training and education program for the 737 MAX, in an effort to ensure unintended MCAS activation will not happen again.

[VIDEO] Diehl Aviation Showcases Smart Cabin Concepts at AIX

During Aircraft Interiors Expo earlier this week, Diehl Aviation displayed a number of innovations, ranging from a “hygienic lavatory” that doesn’t require passengers to touch anything, to smart surfaces that create new branding opportunities and a “bookable bin.” Technology Specialist Marcel Schmedes walked APEX Media director Maryann Simson through the company’s latest concepts during a video interview filmed at the show. Diehl has also announced that Qatar Airways will be the first airline to install its 3-D-printed Curtain Comfort Header, co-developed with Airbus for the A350 XWB in just 12 months and already certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.

When Ads Fly: Immfly Launches Advertising Division to Commercialize IFE

Wireless in-flight entertainment (IFE) provider Immfly has launched a media division for in-flight advertisers called Adsfly. The impetus to separate its advertising business from its content business was due to the overwhelming demand the company received to create in-flight ad campaigns. “The success we’ve had with advertisers justified having a stand-alone division,” said Sotiris Damianos, marketing director at Immfly. With the addition of the Adsfly onboard ad-server, there is not only a dedicated team to serve advertisers, there’s also a tool for them. “Advertisers can now place messages, products, service and deals in unique ways in front of a captive audience,” Immfly said in a press release.

Cadami and aeroFi Combine Coded Caching and Li-Fi for Streaming

Software company Cadami and connectivity innovator aeroLiFi have introduced technology that uses Li-Fi (the transmission of data via light) and coded caching to stream content to passengers. While Li-Fi provides a stable communications link – enough for HD and 4K content – there is a downside: if the signal is blocked, the connection is severed. But with Cadami’s coded caching technology, content can be broken into tiny chunks, stored throughout the network, and intelligently combined and transmitted to a passenger when they hit the play button. “Li-Fi provides a stable communications link that doesn’t degrade and that has enough capacity for each passenger to stream content,” says Birger Timm, aeroLiFi’s managing director.
