[PHOTOS] Winners of the Passenger Choice Awards for Europe Announced at APEX MMM

Virgin Atlantic, Icelandair, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Aeroflot accepted Passenger Choice Awards in Dublin yesterday. The winners were determined by airline customers, who ranked their in-flight experience using the TripIt app. Steve O’Connor, portfolio director for APEX Media, announced the winners and APEX CEO Joe Leader distributed the awards at the APEX MultiMedia Market networking party, which took place at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum and Ely Bar.

Aer Lingus Selects Cobalt Aerospace for LED Mood Lighting

Aer Lingus has installed new customized LED mood lighting on board its fleet. The system was developed in partnership with Cobalt Aerospace with the aim of minimizing passenger jet lag and fatigue by delivering a series of light settings such as “Strong Blue” and “Dim Lavender” for each phase of a flight. “We are delighted to unveil the new LED mood lighting system, which will further enhance the Aer Lingus guest in-flight experience,” said Mike Rutter, Aer Lingus’ chief operating officer.

Ryanair to Launch a Redesigned and More Personalized Website

Ryanair has partnered with Boxever to develop a new and more personalized “digital experience” for its customers. Ryanair said the new website will offer visitors a “people like you” experience that delivers recommendations for destinations, hotels and ground transportation. Boxever CEO Dave O’Flanagan said the company will use machine learning and artificial intelligence to help Ryanair understand what customers want and then put “the right offer in front of the right customer.”

Retuned: British Airways Recomposes Its Iconic Jingle

British Airways has created a new musical composition based on the “Flower Duet,” a piece of music that it has regularly used in television commercials and during the passenger boarding process. The musical theme, from French composer Léo Delibes’ opera Lakmé, has been updated “to reflect British Airways’ history, in the airline’s centenary year” and includes 10 variations to represent milestones in the carrier’s history, such as its founding, Concorde’s farewell and the opening of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport.

United to Offer Direct Newark–Cape Town Flights

United Airlines is to become the first US carrier to offer a nonstop service between Newark, New Jersey, and Cape Town, South Africa, this December. The flight will run three-times weekly through March 15, 2020, and will be operated on a 787-9 Dreamliner. At 7,817 miles, the route will become United’s sixth longest, with the southbound flight scheduled for 14.5 hours and the return for about 16 hours. The new route spells the return of Africa to United’s route network for the first time in three years.

Garuda’s Citilink LCC Denies Plans to Establish a Malaysian Affiliate

Garuda Indonesia’s low-cost subsidiary Citilink has denied involvement in discussions with two Malaysian companies about setting up an affiliate airline using its branding. Radio frequency identification company SMTrack announced on April 15 plans to acquire a 60% stake in Dexma Express, Citilink’s Malaysian sales agent, and rebrand it as Citilink Malaysia. However, Citilink's vice-president corporate secretary Resty Kusandarina told FlightGlobal, "We have not set up any future plan in establishing a business entity in Malaysia. For the time being, we conduct our operations in Malaysia under a cooperation with a local GSA for ticket sales."

Earth Day: Etihad Airways to Operate a Flight Without Single-Use Plastics

Etihad Airways said it will become the first airline in the Middle East to operate a flight without any single-use plastics on board. Flight EY484 will depart from Abu Dhabi on April 21 and will land in Brisbane on Earth Day, April 22. Etihad has also made a pledge to eliminate up to 20% of single-use plastics on board flights by June 1, which will represent a saving of 100 tons of plastic by the end of 2019.
