Spider-Man Weaves His Way Into United Airlines' New Safety Video

United Airlines has launched its latest in-flight safety demonstration video, featuring Spider-Man, ahead of the next installment of the Marvel franchise, which will hit cinemas on July 2. The airline worked with Sony and Marvel to weave the FAA’s required safety instructions with special effects to create a fast-paced short film starring Spider-Man and a trio of villains. “We were able to make this safety video with movie theater-style production and effects. It’s not something we usually have the opportunity to do, ” said Mark Krolick, United’s vice-president of Marketing.

Iberia App Can Now Measure Luggage Using AR

Iberia customers can now scan their carry-on luggage using a smartphone camera to determine whether it is within the dimensions allowed by the airline. The function, which is available on the airline’s iOS app, was developed using ARKit, Apple's augmented reality development platform. LATAM and KLM offer a similar feature in their iOS apps.

Cathay Pacific Plans to Unveil New Business Class and Fleet-Wide Wi-Fi by End of 2019

Cathay Pacific said it will offer fleet-wide in-flight Wi-Fi by the end of this year and will unveil a new business-class product in the third quarter of 2019. Additionally, it will introduce new economy-class seats. The Hong Kong-based carrier announced the upcoming passenger experience enhancements as part of its new “Move Beyond” initiative. “Move Beyond is our call to action,” said Cathay Pacific CEO Rupert Hogg. “We choose to lead and blaze a trail of progress. It represents our continued commitment to delivering personal service that moves people emotionally.”

Emirates’ Boeing 777X Will Include Next-Gen First- and Business-Class Cabins

Emirates said its forthcoming fleet of 150 Boeing 777X jets will feature fully enclosed next-generation first-class suites similar to those on board the airline’s latest Boeing 777-300s. The 777X business-class cabin, which could include direct-aisle access for every passenger, will take inspiration from Emirates’ existing Airbus A380 and 777 business-class products. Deliveries of the 777X are scheduled to begin in 2020.

Air France to Make Cuts to Short-Haul Network

Air France plans to cut up to 465 jobs from its short-haul operations in an effort to limit losses. The decision was made amid increased competition from low-cost carriers and high-speed trains. The airline said it will eliminate positions on French domestic routes over the coming year and that it will begin consultations with unions and other stakeholders. The reduction in capacity will amount to 15% of Air France’s short-haul network by the end of 2021.

PIT Trials New Solutions for Visually Impaired Passengers

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) recently tested a smart suitcase to help visually impaired passengers navigate the terminal. BBeep tracks pedestrians in the user’s path using a camera and beeps when a collision is imminent. NavCog, a smartphone-based turn-by-turn navigation app, was also tested at PIT.

Lufthansa Becomes First Airline to Secure IATA ONE Order Certification

Lufthansa has become the first airline to attain IATA ONE Order certification after completing a one-year pilot. ONE Order is IATA’s IT initiative aimed at consolidating passengers’ personal information and purchases within a single record. “With their [New Distribution Capability] and ONE Order involvement, the Lufthansa Group is helping to take our industry further along the road to a modern digital retail experience,” said Yanik Hoyles, IATA’s director of Industry Distribution Programs.
