Air Italy to Increase Airbus A330 Fleet Instead of Leasing Dreamliners

Air Italy’s decision to switch from Boeing 787s to Airbus A330-200s was made because of delays in delivering new Dreamliners to Qatar Airways, which owns a 49% stake in the Italian carrier. Qatar Airways originally planned to transfer some of its existing 787-8s to Air Italy as the Doha-based carrier anticipated the delivery of newer 787-9s. Delays to the arrival of the 787-9s have forced a change of plans. “It makes more sense at this time to grow our A330 fleet due to existing operational synergies and cost efficiencies, due to the commonality across pilots, engineering and crew,” an Air Italy spokesperson said.

Ground Cleared for International Airport Close to Machu Picchu

Work has started on clearing ground for the construction of a multi-billion-dollar international airport near Machu Picchu, scheduled for completion by 2023. The airport would open up the 15th century Inca citadel and UNESCO World Heritage Site to direct flights from Latin America and the US. Critics say airplanes would pass low over Ollantaytambo and its nearby archeological park and could cause damage to the Inca ruins. However, Peru’s finance minister, Carlos Oliva, said the airport will be built because “it’s very necessary for the city of Cusco,” and pointed to a series of technical studies to support its construction.
