Air Canada Is in Talks to Buy Air Transat

Air Canada is in negotiations to buy Transat AT, the company that owns Air Transat. The proposed deal would value Transat AT at around $387 million, equal to $9.67 per share. "A combination with Transat represents a great opportunity for stakeholders of both companies," said Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada's CEO, in a written statement. "This includes the shareholders of both Transat and Air Canada, employees of both companies, who will benefit from increased job security and growth prospects, and Canadian travelers.”

Airbus Is Considering Buying Bombardier’s Belfast Plant

Airbus is considering buying Bombardier’s wing production operation in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which employs 3,600. Guillaume Faury, Airbus’ recently appointed CEO, said taking over the Belfast plant is an option, but said that there are “many alternatives” to a bid and that the evaluation is at an early stage. Airbus is a major customer of the Belfast operation, which manufactures the wings for the A220 and the engine covers for the A320neo.

Boom Uses Dassault’s Cloud-Based Design Platform to Accelerate Supersonic Jet Development

Boom Supersonic announced it has bought a cloud-based platform from Dassault Systèmes to accelerate the design and development of Overture, its Mach-2.2 commercial jet. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform offers a three-dimensional visualization of an aircraft’s components and how they fit together. The Denver-based startup said the design tool will halve the development time of its prototype and will improve the aircraft’s build quality. Boom said its 55-seater will be 30% more efficient and 30 times quieter than the Concorde.

TWA Hotel Opens Its Doors to Guests at JFK

The TWA Hotel at New York’s JFK Airport has officially opened to guests. The 512-room hotel is located in the 1960s terminal that was used by Trans World Airlines until 2001. It features a cocktail bar inside a retired Lockheed Constellation aircraft, another bar with a retro red-carpeted lounge, a “Departures Hall” with takeaway food options, a shop selling TWA memorabilia and a museum. The rooftop features an infinity pool, an observation deck and a bar with views over JFK’s Runway 4.

Music Licensing in IFE: Where Is the Industry Now?

Following various high-profile lawsuits against airlines and content service providers in the US regarding the use of unlicensed music in 2013 and 2014, music rights owners have worked to legitimize the in-flight entertainment market. Air France Starts Selling Its Onboard Wine and Spirits Selection Online

Air France has started selling the selection of wines, champagnes and spirits that it serves on board through LaCave, its new online retail platform for alcoholic beverages. The initiative was developed in partnership with, a French wines and spirits marketplace, to allow customers to buy the same beverages that they sampled during a flight.
