Ryanair to Purchase Malta Air

Malta Air will join the Ryanair Group of airlines, which includes Buzz, Lauda and Ryanair, after Ryanair Holdings announced today that it has agreed to purchase the Maltese startup airline. Ryanair plans to grow its Malta-based fleet of six Boeing 737s to 10 aircraft over three years. “We look forward to working closely with the Maltese authorities over the coming years as we hope to add over 50 more aircraft to the Maltese register,” Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said.

EmbraerX Unveils eVTOL Concept at Uber Elevate Summit

EmbraerX today unveiled a new electric flying vehicle concept during Uber Elevate Summit 2019 in Washington, DC. The electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle (eVTOL) concept is the result of a range of tests and simulations aimed at developing an autonomous urban mobility solution with high reliability and low operations costs that could one day be used in the Uber Elevate ecosystem. “Our team looks forward to continued collaboration with the Embraer team to achieve a quiet, green, and safe, aerial ridesharing vehicle," said Mark Moore, engineering director of Aviation at Uber.

SkyBuys Duty-Free App Launches at Sydney Airport

SkyBuys, a duty-free retail platform, has launched at Sydney Airport, following a successful trial of the service in partnership with concessionaire Heinemann Australia. Passengers can now shop for duty-free items with the SkyBuys App, which is available for iOS and Android devices, at any stage of the journey, including before arrival at the airport.

United Expands Use of ConnectionSaver Tool

United Airlines will extend usage of its data tool, designed to reduce the number of missed flight connections, to all its hubs. The airline launched its ConnectionSaver service on all its flights at Denver Airport in February, before expanding it to Chicago O’Hare. The tool scans flights for customers with tight connections to assess whether flights can be held without inconveniencing other passengers.

ATPCO to Provide Flight Pricing and Retailing Content to TravelSky

ATPCO and TravelSky, a provider of IT solutions for China’s aviation and travel industry, today announced that they’ve signed a five-year deal. The agreement means the Chinese GDS is now a subscriber to ATPCO’s basic pricing and shopping content as well as retailing solutions. “There’s a lot of pressure, intense competition, in fact, from LCCs [low-cost carriers] in Asia, so the major airlines will need to better reveal their service and product differentiators,” said Jonathan Savitch, chief commercial officer of ATPCO.

Aircraft Seat Market Forecasted to Grow to $18 Billion by 2025

The aircraft seating market is set to grow from $12 billion in 2018 to $18 billion by 2025, according to new research by Global Market Insights. Increasing aircraft demand from airlines, spurred by rising passenger traffic, will drive the market, the report said. The narrow-body aircraft seating sector is expected to experience the highest growth rate until 2025.

Thai Airways’ Latest Amenity Kit Goes Royal

Thai Airways has launched a special-edition amenity kit to celebrate the birthday of Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana, which was on June 3. Thai Airways’ Royal Silk Class (business-class) passengers on outbound flights more than four hours in duration will receive a gray sedge-woven amenity kit. The bags are produced by a sedge-weaving group in the Thai province of Rayong.
