[PHOTOS] Uber Unveils Air Taxi Cabin Interior Mockup by Safran

A mockup of the interior of an Uber Air vehicle, created by Safran Cabin’s Design and Innovation Studio, is on display at the Uber Elevate Summit in Washington, DC, this week. The cabin features four herringbone seats, rotated slightly toward their respective windows to optimize the view, plus a pilot seat. Safran Helicopter Engines provided the hybrid-electric propulsion system for the Bell Nexus mockup, which was unveiled at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show.

British Airways Livestreams Startup Pitches to Judges in Flight

A group of judges, including British Airways CEO Alex Cruz, enjoyed a unique form of in-flight entertainment on a flight from San Francisco to London yesterday as pitches from five startups were livestreamed from Heathrow Airport. The initiative is part of British Airways’ BA2119 program, which explores what the customer experience will be like over the next century, as the airline celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

Mango Airlines Orders Acro’s Series 3 Ultra Economy Class Seat

Mango Airlines has selected Acro’s Series 3 Ultra Economy Class seat for installation on board two Boeing 737-800s. The Johannesburg-based low-cost carrier has a longstanding relationship with Acro and has received 14 shipsets since first selecting the seat in 2014. “By selecting Series 3 Ultra once again, we are delighted that Mango has continued to recognize the qualities of this classic Acro product,” said Alan McInnes, Acro’s SVP, Sales. “The seat meets the heavy demands of the hardworking low-cost carrier fleet as it delivers unrivalled reliability and cost of ownership.”

Avianca Appoints Aeroméxico’s van der Werff as CEO

Avianca has appointed Aeroméxico’s chief operating officer Anko van der Werff as its new CEO. The move follows the sudden resignation of former CEO Hernan Rincon last month after a major shakeup resulting in the ousting of German Efromovich, Avianca’s biggest shareholder, as the airline’s chairman. Before his five-year stint at Aeroméxico, van der Werff served as Qatar Airways’ vice-president of Pricing.

United Airlines Adopts Airbus’ Skywise Data Platform

United Airlines has signed up to Skywise, Airbus’ open data platform. The Chicago-based carrier will use Skywise to enhance maintenance and engineering operations across its Airbus fleet. “Skywise will bring significant value by unlocking data, which will power operational efficiency in aircraft maintenance and flight operations for United Airlines’ fleet,” said Marc Fontaine, Airbus’ digital transformation officer.

Bengaluru Airport Launches Indoor Ambulance Service

An indoor ambulance service has launched inside Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. Two battery-powered ambulances, operated by emergency medical technicians, will be used to offer 24-hour emergency medical service within the terminal building. The vehicles are equipped with medical devices, including oxygen cylinders, that help emergency medical technicians treat people while they are transported to a nearby hospital.

Does the Future of IFC Point to Electronically Steerable Antennas?

Speaking on a panel at the 2019 Global Connected Aircraft Summit, John-Paul Szczepanik, Phasor’s chief technology officer, said he believes electronically steerable antennas will be the next-generation disruptive IFC technology. “We’re working toward a fully electronically steered antenna with no moving parts at all which brings with it inherent reliability and improvements,” he said.
