Thales’ New Technology to Enable 4K Ultra High-Definition IFE Content

Thales has developed new security and encoding technologies for its 4K in-flight entertainment systems that will see Emirates passengers able to stream premium ultra high-definition content from Hollywood studios when the carrier launches Thales’ latest AVANT IFE solution on its Boeing 777X fleet in 2020. Thales also announced that it has partnered with Gemalto to improve the remote identification and tracking of unmanned air systems.

[PHOTOS] JAL Takes Delivery of Its First Airbus A350

Japan Airlines took delivery of its first of 31 Airbus A350 aircraft today in Toulouse. JAL will operate the extra-wide-body (XWB) passenger aircraft on its route between Tokyo Haneda and Fukuoka, starting in September. “This is a very beautiful summary for our 50th anniversary: Japan Airlines finally becomes an Airbus user,” said Christian Scherer, Airbus’ chief commercial officer.

Boom Supersonic Partners With JPA Design for Overture Interiors

Boom Supersonic has partnered with JPA Design to develop the cabin interior of Overture, the company’s Mach-2.2 commercial airliner. JPA Design will work in collaboration with Boom’s internal team to tailor the seating options, maximize cabin flexibility and work with airlines, such as Virgin Atlantic, which has signed options for the aircraft. “We are deeply excited to partner with Boom, a company that shares our belief in the potential of design and technology to transform how we live and also our desire to re-examine the entire passenger journey,” said Ben Orson, JPA Design’s managing director.

Mitsubishi Reveals SpaceJet M90/100 Regional Aircraft

Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation officially announced the renamed Mitsubishi SpaceJet family of jets. The SpaceJet range of aircraft will include the SpaceJet M75, M90 (previously known as the MRJ90) and a new larger variant called the SpaceJet M100. “The Mitsubishi SpaceJet family represents our plan to redefine the business of regional air travel,” said Hisakazu Mizutani, president of Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation. “These products mark our dedication to a segment in desperate need of change that will allow airlines to enhance the satisfaction of their passengers.”

Airbus Tests Flapping Wingtips to Reduce Turbulence

Airbus has developed a scale-model aircraft with flapping wingtips that are designed to minimize turbulence by reducing drag and wing weight. The remote-controlled AlbatrossOne is based on the A321 and has a semi-aeroelastic hinge, which allows the wingtips to move freely in flight. It is built from carbon fiber, glass fiber-reinforced polymers and components from additive-layer manufacturing. More tests will take place before the demonstrator is scaled up.

JetBlue Names Aircraft in Honor of RuPaul’s Drag Race

JetBlue announced a series of initiatives throughout Pride Month as part of its ongoing support for various LGBTQ+ organizations. To celebrate the airline’s partnership with VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race, it has named one of its Airbus A320s “Shantay Blue Stay” after RuPaul’s signature phrase, which was nominated as part an aircraft naming contest. JetBlue has also released a one-of-a-kind video on VH1 and social media featuring Bob the Drag Queen and Trixie Mattel, who highlight the airline’s complimentary snacks and legroom in economy class.

WestJet Revamps Onboard Experience on Dreamliner Flights

WestJet has refreshed the in-flight experience on its Boeing 787 flights between Calgary and London, Paris and Dublin. Business-class passengers will receive tan-colored amenity kits designed by Montreal-based vegan leather brand Matt & Natt containing organic skincare products from Toronto’s Province Apothecary. Rocky Mountain Soap Company kits that feature handmade products will also be offered on select flights. Additionally, a new soundtrack of soulful music from Canadian singer Sean Jones will be played during boarding.
