Airbus Unveils the A321XLR

Airbus unveiled the A321XLR (Extra Long Range), a new A320neo variant capable of flying up to 4,700 nautical miles, which is 15% further than the existing LR model. Air Lease Corp ordered 27 A321XLRs as part of a larger contract for 100 aircraft, worth $11 billion at list prices. The 240-seat XLR version of the A321 will have a maximum takeoff weight of 101 metric tons and will be capable of flying on routes between Central Europe and destinations US Midwest. The Air Lease order also includes 23 A321neos and 50 A220s.

Boeing to Buy EnCore Group

Boeing has agreed to buy California-based EnCore Group, a supplier of cabin components to the aerospace company. The acquisition includes the company’s EnCore Interiors, EnCore International and LIFT by EnCore divisions. Boeing has previously partnered with LIFT by EnCore for the launch of its Tourist Class Seating, which is designed to complement the Boeing 737 Sky Interior.

American Airlines Completes Fleet-Wide Rollout of Satellite In-Flight Wi-Fi

American Airlines has finished rolling out Gogo 2Ku and Viasat satellite-based in-flight Wi-Fi across its mainline narrow-body fleet of 700 aircraft. In addition to offering access to Internet-based services, passengers can stream from a choice of 12 live television channels to their personal devices for free, including on international flights. “In less than two years, we completed broadband internet installation on our entire mainline fleet and we will continue setting new standards in the industry to show our customers we value the time they spend with us,” said Kurt Stache, senior vice-president for Marketing, Loyalty and Sales at American.

Virgin Atlantic Orders 14 Airbus A330neos

Virgin Atlantic has signed an agreement for 14 Airbus A330-900s, plus options for an additional six. Aircraft deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2021 and will be used to replace Virgin’s ageing A340 fleet. The A330neos will feature economy, Premium and Upper Class cabins and will operate on the airline’s routes to and from London’s Gatwick and Heathrow airports and Manchester Airport.

United’s MARVELous Spider-Man-Themed Amenity Kits

Ahead of the July 2 premiere of Spider-Man: Far From Home, United is distributing limited-edition amenity kits to its Polaris business-class passengers, as well as airing a new in-flight safety video. The latest Spider-Man film, which features a United aircraft, will be available to watch on the airline’s in-flight entertainment systems later this year.

LSG Sky Chefs Opens In-Flight Catering Facility in Nairobi

LSG Sky Chefs opened a new in-flight catering facility at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Kenya’s capital. The 13,000-square-foot catering facility, managed in partnership with Apatana Investment and Continental Services, was built to be 100% halal certified. “It has been LSG’s long-standing tradition and understanding of entrepreneurship to create win-win situations by joining forces with partners who have a good reputation and a strong network in their home market,” said Alfred Rigler, head of LSG’s Emerging Markets business unit.

United Airlines Orders Up to 39 Embraer E175s

United Airlines placed an order for up to 39 Embraer E175 aircraft, including 20 firm units and purchase rights for an additional 19. If all options are exercised, the deal could be worth up to $1.9 billion at list prices and deliveries are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2020. The aircraft will be deployed by the airline’s regional subsidiary United Express to replace older aircraft in its fleet.
