Blockchain-Based Biometric Pilot Launches for Passport-Free Flights

The World Economic Forum (WEF) and the governments of Canada and the Netherlands have launched a pilot project for paperless travel on flights between the two countries. The Known Traveller Digital Identity (KTDI) initiative is the first platform to use a traveler-managed identity for paperless international air travel. Passengers are expected to begin using the platform on a trial basis, starting in early 2020 on around 10,000 flights.

Virgin Australia Renews IFE Agreement With Stellar Entertainment

Virgin Australia has renewed its in-flight entertainment services agreement with Stellar Entertainment until 2022. The deal includes account management, licensing, programming and delivery of IFE content over a fleet of 94 aircraft, with a combination of Panasonic Avionics seatback and Lufthansa BoardConnect systems. Stellar Entertainment has been Virgin Australia’s content service provider since 2007.

KLM Develops Travel Guide for Amazon Alexa

KLM has introduced destination guides on the Amazon Alexa-enabled smart speaker system. KLM’s Travel Guide service offers Alexa users personal advice in terms of flight duration, budget, travel dates and the type of vacation or trip they are looking for. “A quarter of American households have a smart speaker in their home. Amazon is an important player in voice technology, both in the US and internationally. For us, it is a logical step to develop a voice service for Amazon Alexa,” said Pieter Groeneveld, senior vice-president for Digital at Air France-KLM.

Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines to Consider Wide-Ranging Partnership

Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines have signed a preliminary agreement with a view to establishing a strategic partnership that could include more codeshares and aircraft maintenance. The agreement comes amid financial difficulties at state-owned Malaysia Airlines, with the government considering whether to shut down, sell or refinance the loss-making carrier. The new cooperation could include “a significant expansion of codeshare flights beyond Singapore-Malaysia routes, as well as enhancements on the frequent flyer program front,” both airlines said in a joint statement.

Europe’s Airports Commit to Net Zero CO2 Emissions by 2050

Google Flights signed an expanded long-term deal with ATPCO that gives the metasearch website access to all Routehappy rich content. The agreement continues Google Flights’ five-year relationship with Routehappy, granting flight shoppers access to information on flight amenities such as Wi-Fi, seat pitch, onboard entertainment and power availability, while also providing access to Universal Ticket Attributes (UTAs) and Universal Product Attributes (UPAs). UTAs provide easy-to-understand information about individual fares, such as cancellation policies and baggage restrictions, while UPAs visually highlight in-flight features through descriptive text, photos, graphics and videos.

British Airways Unveils Premium Economy Amenity Kits Made From Recycled Plastic Bottles

British Airways is introducing a new range of amenities for passengers in its premium economy cabin. Starting July 1, BA will offer customers a new amenity kit made from recycled plastic bottles. The kit contains an eyeshade, socks, a pen, toothbrush and toothpaste and lip balm from Scaramouche & Fandango. Passengers will also be offered a new quilt and cushion featuring a herringbone design. New alcoholic cocktails, including a gin fizz and Bloody Mary, and a non-alcoholic citrus twist will also be offered.
