SAS Selects Inmarsat GX Aviation IFC for Airbus A350 Fleet

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has selected Inmarsat’s GX Aviation in-flight connectivity for its forthcoming fleet of eight Airbus A350-900s. The first aircraft is scheduled for delivery before the end of the year and will be linefit with Inmarsat GX IFC. The service will allow passengers to browse the web, use instant messaging apps, check social media and stream video and audio content. Philip Balaam, Inmarsat Aviation’s president, said the service is a “perfect fit for the airline’s new Airbus A350 aircraft, which will cover high demand long-haul routes from Scandinavia to the United States and Asia.”

China Southern Receives First of 20 Airbus A350s

China Southern Airlines has taken delivery of its first of 20 Airbus A350-900s, which feature new seat products. The new wide-body aircraft has 28 business-class seats in a staggered 1-2-1 layout, 24 seats in the premium economy cabin in a 2-4-2 configuration, and 262 economy-class seats in a 3-3-3 layout. Each economy seat features an 11.6-inch seatback display and a USB charging outlet. The airline will initially operate the new aircraft on its domestic routes from Guangzhou to Shanghai and Beijing, followed by flights to international destinations.

Former Avianca Chairman Wants to Invest in Alitalia

German Efromovich, the recently ousted chairman of Avianca, wants to buy a stake in Alitalia. In a telephone interview with Il Sole 24 Ore, he said he could buy a stake in the bankrupt Italian flag carrier of up to 30 percent, worth $273 million. Efromovich, who signed a nondisclosure agreement with Alitalia’s advisers, said he has the funds required for the investment and would not have to borrow money.

Eros Now Brings Bollywood to BA

British Airways has partnered with Eros International to launch an in-flight entertainment channel. Branded Eros Now, the same name as Eros International’s on-demand Indian and South Asian entertainment network, the channel gives passengers the chance to sample some of the 12,000+ Bollywood films and television shows available through the subscription-based platform. “British Airways was keen on having a popular Indian brand on board to cater to the passengers from this region [and] Eros Now’s popularity made it the [perfect fit],” said Prashant Gaonkar, Eros International’s VP Inflight Entertainment.

[PHOTOS] Finnair Opens Platinum Wing Lounge Inside Helsinki Airport

Finnair has opened a new redesigned premium lounge inside Helsinki Airport called the “Platinum Wing.” The revamped space is open to Finnair’s business-class customers and status frequent flyers. It features a unisex sauna, and a dining area that offers an á la carte menu in addition to a standard buffet. A new business-class lounge will open next to the Platinum Wing within a few months and will share the same reception area.

LCY Begins Consultation on Development Plans

In a draft master plan for public consultation, London City Airport (LCY) has revealed how it plans to accommodate 11-million passengers every year by 2035 with “limited further development.” Potential changes include airfield upgrades, the reconfiguration of existing stands to handle the latest generation aircraft and three additional aircraft stands. The consultation runs for 12 weeks until September 20, with the airport due to produce a final master plan before the end of 2019.

Air New Zealand to Serve Alcohol-Free Spirits

During July, Air New Zealand passengers flying between Auckland and San Francisco in Business Premier can order cocktails made with alcohol-free spirits from Kiwi distillery Ecology & Co. The airline will serve a “Muriwai Mule” made with Ecology & Co’s Asian Spice and a “Tahi Rua Tonic” made with its London Dry product, but the alcohol-free spirits will also be available with soda and ice for passengers wanting a zero-sugar beverage. Air New Zealand's senior manager of Customer Experience, Niki Chave, said the decision follows a “the rising global interest in ‘cleaner’ drink choices.”
