Air France Wants to Phase Out Its Airbus A380 Fleet

Air France-KLM CEO Benjamin Smith wants to phase out Air France's fleet of A380s by 2023 or 2024, rather than revamp their interiors. According to La Tribune, the French carrier wants to replace its fleet of 10 superjumbos with A350-1000s or Boeing 787s, because Smith prefers smaller aircraft that generate higher yields. The French financial newspaper said the carrier is also planning to order a mix of Airbus A220s and A320neos at the end of this month.

Global Eagle Introduces Apple Pay to Southwest Airlines In-Flight Wi-Fi Platform

Southwest Airlines passengers can now pay for in-flight Wi-Fi access using Apple Pay-enabled devices with Face ID or Touch ID biometric verification via Global Eagle’s Airtime Portal and Airtime Framework. “In-flight Wi-Fi allows our customers to remain connected to what matters most in their lives and we are happy to bring Apple Pay on board as a seamless payment option to further enhance their experience,” said Tara Bamburg, Southwest Airlines’ manager of Inflight WiFi and Entertainment.

Ryanair Slashes 2020 Growth Plan, Blames 737 MAX Delays

Ryanair has cut its growth forecast for next summer by half, citing delays in deliveries of grounded Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Europe’s largest low-cost carrier has orders for 135 of the 737 MAX jets and is one of Boeing’s biggest customers for the aircraft type. Ryanair said today that it expects the 737 MAX to return to service before the end of the year. The airline's first few 737 MAX aircraft are scheduled to be delivered between January and February 2020.

Grab Launches App-Based Meal Ordering for Airport Restaurants

E-commerce platform Grab has launched its order-at-the-table (OAT) product at airports in the US and UK. The service allows travelers at participating airport restaurants to order their meals via a smartphone app. “While some airport restaurants have deployed tablets at the table, this technology is expensive, requires significant maintenance and limits the flexibility of space and table designs,” said said Jeff Livney, chief experience officer at Grab. “OAT gives guests the option to order and pay directly from their secure mobile devices, while still receiving a tailored dining experience.”

Dubai Airports Looks to the Sun

Dubai Airports and Etihad Energy Services Company have installed a solar energy system comprising 15,000 photovoltaic panels at Terminal 2 of Dubai International Airport. The solar project will generate 7,483,500 kWh of energy annually and reduce annual CO2 emissions by 3,243 metric tons. The scheme is part of Dubai’s commitment to reduce the city’s energy consumption by 30 percent by 2030.
