United Adds Capacity by Buying Secondhand Boeing 737s

United Airlines has signed an agreement to buy 19 Boeing 737-700s, scheduled for delivery in December. However, the Chicago-based carrier didn’t disclose what airline it is buying the aircraft from. Despite issues surrounding the grounding of United’s 14 MAX 9 jets, the airline expects to boost capacity between 3% and 4% this year, while revenue jumped to $11.4 billion last quarter, up more than 6% compared to the same quarter a year ago.

Emirates to Launch Dubai–Mexico City Flights (via Barcelona)

Emirates will launch flights between Dubai and Mexico City, via Barcelona. Following a lengthy evaluation by the Mexican government, the Dubai-based carrier announced the route will commence on a daily basis as of December 9. Emirates aborted an attempt last year to launch the service after Aeroméxico protested the plan due to the frequency of flights, with Mexican authorities offering a three-times weekly service to Emirates instead. “Barcelona was a natural choice for a stopover," said Emirates’ president Tim Clark, claiming that the city’s air connectivity with Mexico City is “underserved.”

Biometric Facial Recognition E-Gates Do Not Like Beards and Piercings, Says Report

New research has revealed some of the reasons why travelers using facial recognition e-gates with biometric passports fail the border verification check. Research compiled by UK-based contact lens retailer Feel Good Contacts found that physical factors such as beards, facial piercings, weight loss or weight gain could be enough to fail the check. Other factors, such as mood, alertness and physical condition, can also contribute to failed checks, according to findings by Matt Lewis, research director at cybersecurity and risk mitigation firm NCC Group.
