United Is Aiming to Make In-Flight Wi-Fi Free

United Airlines hopes to eventually offer its in-flight Wi-Fi service for free. During an earnings call last Wednesday, United’s president Scott Kirby said the carrier has spent the past year improving its in-flight connectivity software and hardware, but did not reveal a timeline for when the airline plans to stop charging for access. “We've seen a 20% improvement in customer satisfaction for Wi-Fi and our compensation refund rates are down around two-thirds because the system is just more reliable,” Kirby said.

Ensemble Media Acquires GUE Tech’s In-Flight Games Business

Ensemble Media has acquired GUE Tech, a Miami-based in-flight entertainment provider that specializes in games. Max Lingua, GUE Tech’s CEO, said the merger with Ensemble Media will provide an “excellent opportunity to further extend the reach” of its entertainment offering. Dan Harris, Ensemble Media’s managing director, said the acquisition has “produced an unparalleled selection of game titles from every genre.”

British Airways and Lufthansa Suspend Flights to Cairo Over Security Concerns

British Airways and Lufthansa canceled all flights to Cairo on Saturday after the UK government warned of a heightened risk of terrorist attacks in Egyptian airspace . The abrupt decision affected passengers waiting at London Heathrow Airport’s departure gate, who were told they could not reschedule their flight for at least one week. Lufthansa resumed flights on Sunday. BA said the seven-day suspension of flights is “a precaution to allow for further assessment.”

Collins Aerospace Partners With Aerothai for Asia-Pacific Connectivity

Collins Aerospace and Aerothai, a Thailand-based air services provider, will provide a wireless connectivity system for airlines in the Asia-Pacific region. The system will initially be available for airlines operating Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft. Collins Aerospace said it is the only system that can handle multiple data links, including satellite communications, broadband satellite, Wi-Fi and cellular, to ensure that airlines no longer need to manually download quality assurance data (FOQA and MOQA) when the aircraft is on the ground.

Eurowings Partners With TaxiTender

Eurowings has partnered with TaxiTender, a global taxi booking platform, to enable customers in 124 countries to book door-to-door journeys with a fixed price guarantee. Customers will be able to book taxi rides using the Eurowings mobile app and also via the airline’s website in the near future. “Eurowings customers will benefit from even more stress-free travel planning directly from their doorstep to their final destination,” said Ojo Meijers, CEO of TaxiTender.

UK Wants to Introduce Opt-Out Carbon Charge for Air Travel

The UK government is planning to launch a carbon charge for air travelers as part of an effort to reduce CO2 emissions. The scheme could work on an opt-out basis and also be applied to journeys made on trains, buses and ferries. The government said it hopes the initiative will “drive consumer choices towards less polluting journey options.”
