UK Court Rejects BA’s Attempt to Prevent Summer Pilot Strike

British Airways lost a UK court bid to stop a strike by pilots in the peak summer travel season. London’s High Court decided on Tuesday not to grant BA an injunction against a pilots’ union, whose members voted 93% in favor of a strike, amid a dispute over pay, profit sharing and a share-awards program. The judge gave the airline permission to appeal the decision. A BA spokesperson said in a statement that it was “very disappointed” with the decision,” and will continue to “pursue every avenue to protect the holidays of thousands of our customers this summer.”

Cathay Pacific Passengers Prefer a Certain IFC Provider

Cathay Pacific said its passengers are happier with one of its two in-flight connectivity systems on board its fleet, but it declined to say which one. The Hong Kong-based carrier is retrofitting Gogo’s 2Ku IFC on board its Airbus A330s and Boeing 777s, while its Airbus A350s are being linefit with Panasonic’s eXConnect Ku-band system. “A lot of our customers are quite happy more with one platform – I won’t say who, but the good thing is both sides are continuing to improve,” Cathay’s general manager for Customer Experience and Design Vivian Lo told Runway Girl Network.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport will close its smoking lounges early next year. A new city law banning smoking in Atlanta’s bars, restaurants and other enclosed spaces, including airports, will come into effect on January 2, 2020. ATL’s post-security smoking lounges will be converted to other purposes and travelers will be directed to outdoor smoking areas. “Going smoke-free means that millions of people will be fully protected from exposure to secondhand smoke,” said Cynthia Hallett, president and CEO of Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights and the ANR Foundation.

Eutelsat and Inmarsat Legal Dispute Continues

A legal dispute between Inmarsat and Eutelsat about the use of mobile satellite services in Europe is ongoing, with no resolution in sight. Eutelsat says Inmarsat is using terrestrial relay antennas to offer in-flight connectivity in French airspace as part of the European Aviation Network, which the company believes was not the original mandate for the spectrum. Speaking to Via Satellite, Wladimir Bocquet, director of Regulatory Affairs, Spectrum Management and Policy at Eutelsat, said, “Each satellite operator should respect the use of the spectrum it has been allocated for.” Fabio Leite, Inmarsat’s VP of Regulatory and Market Access, dismissed Eutelsat’s claim as “a very speculative argument.”
