Private Equity Firm Agrees to Buy Cobham

US private equity firm Advent International has agreed to buy Cobham in a cash deal worth $5 billion. The company employs 10,000 people in more than 100 countries and supplies avionics products in every passenger jet made by Airbus. “We have worked intensively over the last two and a half years to focus on our customers and our financial and operating performance,” said David Lockwood, Cobham’s CEO. “This offer reflects the potential for future growth and improving performance, and is an endorsement of our turnaround strategy and our hard-working people.”

JetBlue Pushes Back Cabin Retrofits Because of Airbus A321neo Delays

JetBlue has been forced to postpone a project to retrofit its A321neo aircraft with new cabin interiors, but the airline still plans to finish the project by the original completion date. The airline’s president and COO, Joanna Geraghty, said the delay is due to the late delivery of 84 Airbus A321neo aircraft. The airline based its growth plans on the assumption that it would have 13 A321neos by the end of this year, but it now expects to have just six. To complete the retrofit, JetBlue said it would need to take aircraft out of service, something it can no longer afford to do with the delayed A321neo order.

This Year’s APEX EXPO Lufthansa FlyingLab to Include In-Flight Concert

After a successful first event last year, a second iteration of the APEX EXPO FlyingLab will take place on board Flight LH 452 from Munich to Los Angeles on September 7, before the 40th APEX EXPO officially begins on September 9. In addition to the in-flight conference, featuring speakers from Airbus, Hamburg Aviation, brainboost, zeroG and more, passengers will also witness an in-flight performance inspired by the sounds of an Airbus A380 aircraft. Global Eagle Partners With Language Learning App

Global Eagle has partnered with a language learning app called Drops, with plans to offer vocabulary-focused word games in more than 30 languages. Starting next year, Drops’ new Travel Talk product will be available to passengers via seatback in-flight entertainment and will offer language learning categories such as “meet and greet” and “safety and security.” Commenting on the announcment, Daniel Farkas, co-founder and CEO of Drops, said, “Like Global Eagle, we are committed to supporting global citizenship and increasing connectivity around the world. Language is the perfect way to do this.”

Detalytics and Flywell Join Forces for Personalized Wellness

Detalytics has partnered with Flywell by Charlotte Dodson to offer a wellness service to passengers, pilots and cabin crew. The data analytics firm said it will integrate its personalized health and wellbeing management solutions with Flywell’s guided exercise and meditation techniques for air travelers. “Partnering with Detalytics creates a thorough one-stop wellness solution that enhances traveling guests’ experiences via proven techniques that are supported by quantitative data,” said Dodson, cofounder of Flywell.

Genghis Khan Airlines to Launch Tomorrow

Genghis Khan Airlines plans to begin commercial operations tomorrow using COMAC ARJ21 regional jets. The startup carrier will initially offer routes within Inner Mongolia from its base in Hohhot, the Chinese region’s capital. Genghis Khan Airlines has received two of the 25 ARJ21s it ordered last year and is the second operator of the aircraft, after COMAC-owned Chengdu Airlines.

40 Success Stories: When Gogo Launched 2Ku In-Flight Connectivity

Gogo’s 2Ku in-flight connectivity solution marked a departure from gimbaled antennas. Its alternative hardware offering – a dual set of mechanical phased array antennas measuring just four inches high – meant a reduction in drag and therefore savings on fuel costs for airline customers. Today, the service is still seeing improvements thanks to its open architecture. The 40 Success Stories campaign celebrates APEX members’ most significant achievements in the lead-up to the 40th anniversary of APEX EXPO this September.
