Cebu Air Plans to Fit More Passengers in Airbus A330neo Than Ever Before

Cebu Air said it will rearrange galleys and bathrooms on board its new Airbus A330-900s to fit a record 460 seats, 20 more than the aircraft’s current maximum. The Philippines-based low-cost carrier is pursuing a policy of accommodating as many passengers as possible on the most popular routes, according to Mathieu De Marchi, a consultant at aviation planning and development firm Landrum & Brown. Cebu’s chief executive adviser Mike Szucs said in an email that, “customer comfort and experience will be a primary consideration” but airfares are “always an aspect [that] consumers are conscious about.”

Star Alliance to Develop Biometric Verification Platform

Star Alliance announced it will develop a biometric data-based identification platform to “improve the travel experience” for travelers participating in frequent flyer programs of member airlines. The alliance will partner with NEC Corporation to create a system allowing customers to pass through “curb-to-gate” touchpoints, including check-in, bag-drop, lounge entry and boarding gates, using facial recognition verification technology.

Phasor ESA Obtains ISO 9001 Certification

Phasor has achieved ISO 9001 certification for its electronically-steered antenna (ESA). The certification process, which took six months, means the company is closer to commercializing its products. The ESA features a flat, low profile design and can support traditional fixed satellite networks, high-throughput satellites and non-geosynchronous satellite networks.

WeChat Tests In-Flight Mobile Payments

A pilot project is testinge in-flight payments via Chinese social media app WeChat on two Spring Airlines flights. WeChat Pay users with a credit score above 550 can apply to use the service, which allows them to make purchases on board flights without Internet. Instead, users pay automatically via the app upon landing.

British Airways Unveils New Menus Designed by Tom Kerridge

British Airways has teamed up with Michelin-star chef Tom Kerridge, who has designed new menus across all cabin classes on long-haul flights. The new dishes include fresh seasonal ingredients, such as wild garlic and asparagus, and are intended to blend culinary expertise and flavors that work well at altitude. “The dishes reflect not only my vision and what I do at my restaurants but most importantly, they represent the best of British food to the world,” Kerridge said.

UK Aerospace Firms Prepare (Once Again) for Brexit

The UK’s aerospace industry is ramping up plans to leave the country’s aviation regulator, ahead of a second Brexit deadline at the end of October. More than 600 British aerospace firms have so far applied to be regulated by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) as third-country parties under a new scheme launched last October for companies seeking to access the single market in case of a no-deal Brexit. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, manufacturers which have not secured authorization from the EASA or other European aviation authorities would be unable to sell components to European customers.

40 Success Stories: When Airvision Took the IFE Screen from Communal to Personal

Airvision’s world-first seatback in-flight entertainment (IFE) screens were installed in business and economy class on board a Northwest Airlines Boeing 767 in 1988. Surveys carried out by the carrier together with Warners Bros suggested 70 percent of passengers preferred the personal screens – which offered a choice of six linear channels showing content on a fixed schedule – to overhead units. The 40 Success Stories campaign celebrates APEX members’ most significant achievements in the lead-up to the 40th anniversary of APEX EXPO this September.
