Airbus Starts A220 Assembly in Alabama

Airbus has started production of the A220 at its assembly plant in Mobile, Alabama. The first US-assembled A220 aircraft will be ready next year and Airbus plans to hire more than 400 employees to support increased production. “The expansion of our commercial aircraft production in Mobile to a second product line … further solidifies Airbus’ standing as a truly global aircraft manufacturer,” said Jeffrey Knittel, Airbus Americas’ chairman and CEO.

Decision Time as LOT Polish Airlines Plans Major Wide-Body Order

LOT Polish Airlines is planning a substantial order of either Boeing 787-9/10s or Airbus A350-900/1000s in the near future, said CEO Rafal Milczarski. Speaking to Polish air travel website Fly 4 Free, Milczarski said the country’s flag carrier, which operates an all-Dreamliner wide-body fleet, would make “a decision based on an analysis of which aircraft will best suit LOT's needs and which offer will be the most advantageous.” LOT will also make a separate decision for an order of regional jets, deciding between the Airbus A220 or Embraer E2.

Gilat to Begin Supplying to BizAv IFC Market

Gilat Satellite Networks will soon begin supplying tail-mount aero antennas for the business aviation in-flight connectivity (IFC) market. The announcement comes after the company closed a multimillion-dollar contract to provide antennas to a Tier-1 business aviation supplier. “Gilat’s expansion from commercial aviation into the market segment of business aviation is a major milestone in our IFC strategy,” said Ron Levin, Gilat’s vice-president of Mobility and Global Accounts. “This achievement, of a potential of hundreds of terminals, further strengthens Gilat as a major IFC player in this fast-growing satellite communication market.”

Singapore Airlines Unveils All-New Mobile App

Singapore Airlines launched a redesigned mobile app for iOS and Android smartphones. The app features a new search function that uses image recognition and natural language processing to identify a user’s intent and match it to a Singapore Airlines destination. It also has a tool that allows customers to measure their baggage and determine whether it is within cabin limitations, and includes a real-time voice translator intended to help people communicate while traveling.

ST Engineering Secures First SPACElite I Seat Customer

An unnamed Cambodia-based airline will become the launch customer for ST Engineering’s economy-class seat. The company obtained a supplemental type certificate (STC) from EASA for retrofitting SPACElite I on board Airbus A320 aircraft. Weighing 24 lbs, the seat incorporates features such as an articulating seat pan that allows for large shin clearance and a lumbar cushion using suspension fabric for back support. “With the first successful installation for our launch customer and approval by EASA, we are confident that more airlines and lessors will be showing interest in our seats,” said Lim Serh Ghee, ST Engineering’s president, Aerospace.

PIT Uses Deep Learning to Estimate TSA Wait Times

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) has partnered with Zensors, an artificial intelligence company, to estimate wait times at TSA checkpoints. The Pittsburgh-based company will use deep learning technology to analyze video feeds from the airport’s security cameras on a minute-by-minute basis. Wait-time information is then posted to screens and the website, including predictions about whether wait times will increase or decrease.

In April 2014, Airbus unveiled a clean-sheet aircraft cabin design for the A350 XWB. Two years later the OEM announced that the design features of the cabin would be rolled out across the rest of the Airbus product line under a new brand, Airspace by Airbus.
