JetBlue Selects Viasat IFC for Forthcoming Airbus A220 Fleet

JetBlue announced it has selected Viasat to supply Ka-band satellite in-flight connectivity for its forthcoming fleet of 70 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. The New York-based carrier firmed an order for the short-haul jets in January, with deliveries scheduled to begin delivery in 2020. “With our current and future satellite fleet, we are ready to serve JetBlue as they broaden their plans within the Americas and across to Europe,” said Don Buchman, Viasat’s vice-president and general manager of Commercial Aviation.

OneWeb Focuses on IFC, Appoints Head of Commercial Aviation

OneWeb appointed Ben Griffin as vice-president of its newly formed Commercial Aviation team at the company’s headquarters in London. The new role will see Griffin deliver the company’s low-Earth-orbit satellite-based in-flight connectivity solutions to airline customers. Griffin has spent the past 15 years working in the IFC sector, most recently with Inmarsat for eight years. “I am delighted to have joined a company with so much potential,” said Griffin. “The OneWeb offering is by a long way, simply the best technology, best suited to the aviation market.” OneWeb will be attending APEX EXPO in Los Angeles September 9 to 12.

British Airways Cancels at Least 91 Flights After IT Failure

British Airways cancelled at least 81 flights today at London’s Heathrow Airport and 10 at Gatwick Airport due to an IT glitch. So far, more than 200 flights have been delayed. BA said it has reverted to manual check-in, adding that the problem was not global, but two separate issues affecting online check-in and flight departures. “We are working as quickly as possible to resolve a systems issue which has resulted in some short-haul cancellations and delays from London airports,” the airline said in a statement.

Intelsat-39 Launches Into Orbit

Intelsat successfully launched Intelsat-39 into orbit aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana. The 6,600- kg satellite will provide video distribution and C- and Ku-band connectivity services for the aviation sector, with coverage across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. “Businesses and communities across three continents will have greater access to robust, reliable and resilient connectivity services whenever and wherever they need it,” said Stephen Spengler, Intelsat’s CEO.

American Airlines Secures Naming Rights for New LA Stadium Plaza

American Airlines reached an agreement worth $90 million to become the primary sponsor of the Los Angeles Stadium. The Fort Worth-based carrier signed a 10-year deal for the naming rights to a 2.5-acre space outside the soon-to-be new home of two LA-based NFL teams: the Rams and the Chargers. The American Airlines Plaza will span the area between the 70,000-seat NFL stadium, scheduled to open in 2020, and a 6,000-seat concert venue. The plaza will include a 10-storey glass roofed area that will serve as the main entrance to the stadium.

JetSmart Plans to Increase Its Presence in Argentina’s Domestic Air Travel Market

JetSmart, a low-cost carrier based in Chile, said it plans to add more aircraft and routes to its domestic operations in neighboring Argentina by April next year. In November, JetSmart will launch Airbus A320-operated twice-weekly flights from Rosario to Salta and Neuquen and twice-weekly flights between Ushaia and the low-cost carrier’s base in Buenos Aires’ El Palomar Airport. Additionally, the airline will receive its fourth and fifth A320s by the end of the year.

40 Success Stories: When Lumexis Brought Fiber-To-The-Screen

In 2009, Lumexis Corporation’s Fiber-To-The-Screen (FTTS) system took off on board an Airbus A320 aircraft as part of a test flight operated by US Airways. It marked the first time a fiber-optic network had been used to deliver in-flight entertainment to a seatback screen. Airline customers included flydubai, Lion Air Group, Transaero and Turkish Airlines.
