Cathay Pacific CEO Resigns

Cathay Pacific CEO Rupert Hogg tendered his resignation today, amid increasing scrutiny of the airline over involvement of its employees in anti-government protests in Hong Kong. Cathay’s chief customer and commercial officer, Paul Loo, is also stepping down from his role. Last week, the airline told employees that it would not stop them from joining the demonstrations, but after facing pressure from Chinese state-run media running an online campaign to boycott Cathay, Hogg warned that they could be fired if they “support or participate in illegal protests.” Hogg said he is taking responsibility for what have been “challenging weeks” for the airline.

Boeing Puts 777-8 Development on Hold

Boeing has suspended development of the ultra long-range 777-8 for an indefinite period of time. The decision follows an earlier move to delay the first flight of the 777-9 and was taken to reduce “risk in our development program, ensuring a more seamless transition to the 777-8,” Boeing spokesperson Paul Bergman said. “We continue to engage with our current and potential customers on how we can meet their fleet needs. This includes our valued customer Qantas,” Bergman added. The Australian flag carrier was expected to launch a 21-hour nonstop Sydney–London service using either the 777-8 or an ultra long-range version of the Airbus A350.
