The winners will be revealed during a ceremony at APEX EXPO on Monday, September 9, along with the APEX/Crystal Cabin Award recipient, Passenger Choice Award winners, Official Airline Ratings results and Newcomer of the Year. Lufthansa Allows Passengers to Pay Extra to Offset Carbon Footprint

Lufthansa Innovation Hub unveiled an initiative to offer passengers the option to offset their flight with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Compensaid combines a global airline flight tracking tool with a sustainability platform that enables travelers to directly offset emissions either by paying for SAF or by supporting a reforestation project in Nicaragua. The SAF will then be used on a future Lufthansa flight in the next six months.

Airbus Increases Lavatory Space on A321neos and A321XLRs

Airbus plans to offer more space for lavatories on board its A321neo and A321XLR narrow-body aircraft. Speaking to Runway Girl Network, Anaïs Marzo da Costa, Airbus’ head of Aircraft Interiors Marketing, said the manufacturer is expanding the size of its “Flex Zones,” the areas where hookups for power and water allow airlines to install lavatories. She said these areas will allow airlines to “adapt to their configuration and put the lavatories at the best place within the cabin. A dedicated one for first class, a dedicated one for business, then dedicated ones for economy class, for example.”

Avianca Brasil to Leave Star Alliance in September

Avianca Brasil will cease to be a Star Alliance member on September 1. The move follows several months of bankruptcy proceedings and the withdrawal of its air operations certificate by Brazilian regulators. “Initially joining Star Alliance in 2015, Avianca Brasil made important contributions to our customer proposition in the Brazilian market, and we regret this unfortunate development,” said Star Alliance CEO Jeffrey Goh, adding that the airline’s exit “in no way affects the membership of Avianca S.A.”

Shop and Fly: DUBZ Deploys DXB Check-In Station in Dubai Mall

Shoppers at The Dubai Mall can now check in for flights with nine airlines before heading to Dubai International Airport. Baggage technology and logistics company DUBZ is offering the service from the dnata Travel store inside the mall. For a fee of $27, customers of flydubai, SAUDIA, flynas, China Southern, Kuwait Airways, Gulf Air, SaudiGulf, Royal Jordanian, and Ethiopian Airlines can check in one item of baggage and print boarding passes. Additional pieces of luggage can be added for a fee of $9.

BA Partners With Shell and Velocys to Form Renewable Jet Fuel Plant

British Airways has formed a partnership with Royal Dutch Shell and Velocys, a renewable fuel company, with a view to building Europe’s first plant that transforms commercial waste into jet fuel. BA said it would buy jet fuel from the plant to help achieve its target of reducing ]carbon emissions by 50% by 2050, compared to its 2005 levels. “Sustainable fuel will help power our aircraft for years to come,”said Alex Cruz, BA’s CEO. “It also brings the UK another step closer to becoming a global leader in sustainable aviation fuels.”

40 Success Stories: When AVID Products Created Pneumatic Headsets for IFE

In 1961, AVID Airline Products (AVID) teamed up with Trans World Airlines (TWA) to create the first pneumatic headset for airline passengers. Soon after their debut on TWA, AVID said it was producing the headsets for 97% of the world’s airlines. Pneumatic headsets remained dominant in the in-flight entertainment market until 1979, when the Sony Walkman went on sale. The 40 Success Stories campaign celebrates APEX members’ most significant achievements in the lead-up to the 40th anniversary of APEX EXPO this September.
