Qantas to Operate 19-Hour Test Flights to Assess Health Impact on Passengers and Crew

Qantas is to operate 19-hour test flights between Sydney and London and New York to better understand how passengers and cabin crew cope with such long journeys. The airline plans to launch the nonstop services, which would be the world’s longest, in 2022. The trial Boeing 787-9-operated flights will begin later this year and will carry up to 40 passengers, who will have their health monitored during the journey. Participants will be fitted with wearable technology devices to monitor sleep patterns and food and beverage consumption to determine the impact of the flight on health and the body clock.

[PHOTOS] Volocopter Unveils Fourth-Gen eVTOL Vehicle

Volocopter unveiled the design for VoloCity, its fourth-generation inner-city air taxi model. The 18-rotor electrical vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle will have a range of just under 22 miles and a top speed of 70 mph. It is designed to transport up to two people, including light luggage. The German eVTOL startup said it paid close attention to safety and comfort to ensure VoloCity meets the safety standards set by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. Volocopter said it’s now focusing on developing supporting infrastructure, including establishing “VoloPorts” for takeoff and landing.

Lufthansa CEO Pushes for Industry-Wide Sustainable Fuel Adoption

Speaking at an aviation conference in Leipzig, Germany, Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr announced his commitment to lowering the airline group’s greenhouse gas emissions through the use of carbon-neutral fuels such as synthetic kerosene. He also stressed the need for a "strong, joint commitment from industry and politics to promote sustainable fuels,” adding that governments should do more to incentivize climate protection within the industry.

Air New Zealand CFO Appointed Interim CEO

Air New Zealand’s chief financial officer, Jeff McDowall, will take over as interim CEO once Christopher Luxon steps down from the position on September 25. The airline said McDowall “is not seeking permanent appointment to the role,” but will lead the company while the recruitment process is underway. Luxon’s departure was announced on June 19; however, he will stay on in an advisory capacity to ease the transition for his replacement.

Production of the Dornier 328 Turboprop to Relaunch in Leipzig

Production of the Dornier 328 turboprop could soon be relaunched in Germany after a memorandum of understanding was signed between 328 Support Services, the German federal government and the State of Saxony. The MoU affirms the intention to establish a final assembly line for the D328NEU at Leipzig/Halle Airport, which will be manufactured by a new Germany-based company called DRA, which is a subsidiary of US aerospace firm Sierra Nevada Corporation. The partners expect the program will create up to 250 jobs in Leipzig and up to 100 in Oberpfaffenhofen, near Munich.

BA Gives iPhone XRs to Cabin Crew to Personalize In-Flight Service

British Airways will issue iPhone XR smartphones to 15,000 cabin crew to help them offer a more personalized service to passengers. The devices will be preloaded with apps to enable crew to offer immediate assistance to passengers during a flight. Crew will also be able to access customer information, including their previous flights and meal preferences. This investment is about further empowering our crew and providing them with everything they need to deliver the very best service to our customers while in the air,” said Karen Slinger, British Airways’ head of Inflight Customer Experience.
