With the upcoming Rugby World Cup beginning in September and the Summer Olympics next year, the number of foreign tourists in Japan is expected to surge. The country’s flag carrier will meet demands for domestic travel with a new fleet of Airbus A350 XWBs – the first of which, an A350-900, is slated to fly on September 1, with a new cabin design by London-based design firm tangerine. APEX Media spoke to tangerine's Yuichi Ishihara and Matt Round about their work on the A350 interiors.

Safran to Showcase Upgraded RAVE IFE at APEX EXPO

Safran Passenger Innovations plans to exhibit new products, including the RAVE ULTRA series of 4K displays, at APEX EXPO, taking place September 9 to 12 in Los Angeles. “APEX allows us to demonstrate our entertainment technology leadership and new corporate identity as Safran Passenger Innovations,” said Harry Gray, the company’s vice-president of Sales. “The essence of our company remains the same, bringing innovation and leading ideas to the in-flight entertainment market.”

Spirit Airlines Customers Will Soon Be Able to Book Flights Via WhatsApp

Spirit Airlines customers will be able to book flights using WhatsApp starting next month. The new service is powered by LivePerson, an artificial intelligence messaging solution, and can also deliver travel updates to Spirit customers and allow them to add a bag to their reservation. “We launched this service to better connect with our guests, both domestically and abroad, as many have told us they would rather communicate on a familiar and convenient service like WhatsApp,” said Bobby Schroeter, the airline's vice-president of Marketing and Sales.

Air Canada’s Transat Acquisition to Face Public Interest Assessment

Air Canada’s planned acquisition of Transat AT will face a competition probe before it can be completed. Marc Garneau, Canada’s Minister of Transport, said that a public interest assessment on the deal will be conducted with input from the federal competition commissioner. Garneau said the government has until May 2, 2020, to complete the assessment. The acquisition will also require regulatory approval by the European Commission.

BA Mistakenly Told Thousands of Customers That Their Flights Were Canceled

British Airways pilots are planning to strike on September 9, 10 and 27, but on Friday, the airline told customers who booked flights on other days that their flights had been canceled. The airline received 38,000 calls in the first 24 hours and the confusion generated 33,000 tweets during the same period. BA released a statement on Sunday saying: “We are sorry that some customers received an email in error to say that their flight had been canceled on non-strike days.” It added, “We emailed all those customers within a few hours to clarify that their flight will go ahead as planned.”

Iberia Launches a Home Baggage Collection Service

Iberia launched a service to allow customers to have their baggage collected from a home address and checked in before they arrive at the airport. The “Bag on Board” service is initially available for customers who live in Barcelona and Madrid and costs €15 for the first piece of luggage and €5 for each additional item. Customers can book the service online or by telephone and can track their luggage via real-time email or SMS updates.
